Dallas - Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue

Dallas - Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue The DFW Dachshund Rescue Foundation rehabilitates and re-homes abandoned, discarded, and surrendered dachshunds in the Dallas - Fort Worth area.

We are staffed solely by volunteers, and are supported by donations and adoption fees. The Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation is a well-established 501(c)3 organization with a history of providing dachshund related education and service to the DFW community. If you are looking to adopt or purchase a dachshund, have dachshund related training or behavior questions, or need to place your

dachshund, we may be able to assist you. If not, we will make every effort to find you someone who can. Dachshunds in our program are fully vetted before adoption. This includes being altered, receiving all needed immunizations, having a dental cleaning and being microchipped. Any other medical issues the dog has will also be addressed before being adopted. Our dachshunds are placed in foster homes while they undergo rehabilitation and await adoption. This allows us to better evaluate the personalities of each dog, which provides a better match for potential adopters. While in their foster homes, the dachshunds are socialized, given plenty of love and praise, and some begin to pick up basic housetraining skills and obedience.

Welcome to "Poptart"; who is about 5 or 6 years old. He was impounded as a stray by an area animal shelter and while out on his own was evidently attacked quite badly. He sustained deep injuries to his neck. The shelter got him to the ER vet where the wounds were cleaned and a drain put in one, along with staples in another. At that point they called us as they felt we were in a better place to care for him and to provide the follow up care he will need. He also has a mouth full of dirty and possibly infected teeth, so hopefully in November he will be ready to have that done. Poptart is a BIG boy; he weighs 28 pounds now but probably should weigh about 23 pounds. So weight loss is also on his agenda. (If you are looking for a small dachshund--Poptart is not the one :-)) We will not be placing him anytime soon, as his injuries must heal and dental issues addressed before any consideration of a home is made. We will advise when he is ready to consider a new home.

Please note: He was held at the animal shelter for the legal amount of time. No one came to claim him, so the shelter then can either adopt the dog out from the shelter to new owners or release him to a rescue group. In Poptarts case, the shelter chose to release him to our group. The shelter acted correctly and legally in regard to Poptart.

Tomorrow, September 18th, is North Texas Giving Day. This is the second one of our two fundraisers. If you'd like to contribute to this fundraiser on DFW Dachshund Rescue's behalf, we would be most appreciative.

Miss Winnie, a recent arrival, thanks you for your support! Happily, she already has a home waiting with a couple from our approved our waiting list. So once she is spayed, and then has an appointment with our dental specialist...she will go to her new home! Your contributions help with vet work for dogs like Miss Winnie!

In Memory of Luke; age approx. 16

Luke was one of the sanctuary dogs for DFW Dachshund Rescue. He was found in Arlington, wandering a neighborhood in the July heat of 2021. His “Good Samaritan” called us for help, and we were able to give Luke a sanctuary spot in our program. We decided he would live with us, and he fit into our home immediately. He arrived in a very emaciated state, and it was clear he had been badly neglected for some time. Luke also had a mouthful of infected teeth. Once these issues were resolved, he felt great and settled into his happy new life. At first, he was anxious in the car, thinking, perhaps that we were going to take him somewhere and dump him. Soon he learned to enjoy car rides, especially if he got a puppy cup at Starbucks or grilled chicken nuggets at Chick Filet A. He loved napping on the couch and visiting with anyone who came by our house. He was a great barometer for rescue; because if Luke didn’t like the dog or person, we knew there was a problem. During his years with us he appeared as a “calendar dog” one year and also represented DFW Dachshund Rescue at a big “meet the breed” event a couple of years ago in Dallas. He loved that, as he spent the day on a dog bed on the table so that everyone could pet him.
Luke leaves behind his permanent foster parents, Kathleen & Dave Fulenwider and his additional foster parents who kept him when Kathleen & Dave were out of town: Delia & Ron Johns, Jean Siska and Mary Lee Bryant. We would like to thank Dr. Amanda Tabone and the VCA Angel Animal Hospital staff, the staff at Animal Ophthalmology and Dr. Douglas Stramel and his staff at Advanced Care Veterinary Services. All these individuals were part of giving Luke a wonderful 4 years and three months…his golden years. We are thankful his last years were spent with love and care, and that someone who loved him was with him at the very end. We know he would say a big “thank you” to everyone who loved and cared for him during his years with DFW Dachshund Rescue. We will miss him but feel so fortunate to have had the time we did with him.
