Threshold manners are an often overlooked but SO helpful skill!
The goal: open door β Β move through, it means wait to be invited!
This exercise creates the expectation that an open door means to wait until the human invites you through it.
This prevents bolting, running away, tripping guests, and so much more - it creates connection and clarity with the human before walks even begin π₯³
HOW TO:
Start with your dog on leash and ask them to sit as you approach the door, reward them and move away from the door - repeat while getting closer to the door as your dog learns the pattern
Start to wait for the sit (instead of saying the word) and then saying "let's go" and moving through the door *together*
Without saying sit, start to open the door as you approach, *if they go to bolt use your leash or body to step between them and the open door* - repeat
Once this feels smooth, loop your leash around the door handle (so if they bolt they're still attached to the door) - move through the door just one step and come back and reward if they don't get up - repeat by getting further away/bending down/ adding distractions as your dog is successful
Mix in moments where you do say "let's go" and move through the door together!
This is an easy way to add a minute of training and connection to your daily routine! Practice at doors, crate doors, gates, and more - the more practice the faster and easier your dog will offer the behavior β€οΈ
