I just took this picture of a Northern Mockingbird on thhe campus. No better reminder to CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY and let the know how much you value our public lands. Especially as Texans we know and understand the value of a secure drinking water supply, the vote tomorrow may endanger up to one third of the United States clean drinking water by authorizing a FOREIGN mining operation in the headwaters of the wilderness area. Don’t let foreign corporations poison our waters and decimate our wildlife. CALL YOU SENATORS!

Even if you live in the city (I can’t wait to move…), there’s still pretty spots to find with your dog. Just gotta look for them a bit harder and wander away from the concrete park trails a bit… I guess that’s true for most things nowadays following the paths that worked for previous generations doesn’t quite get us the results it did for them. Same in dog training, the best trainers may start out following someone else path but eventually wander off and find their own! Grab your dog and get outside!

It’s Turkey season y’all! Believe it or not I’m on public land in Texas. No luck so far but we’ll see how the weekend goes! Even though I don’t have a hunting dog with me I used this opportunity to take out our pet Hiwa. Every opportunity to take a dog outside should be taken. Your dog will thank you!

If you are a dog owner, hunter/outdoor enthusiast and or your significant other appreciates pretty things. Grab your dog and go out into nature and go pick some wildflowers!

Especially as hunter-conservationists it is crucial that we know as much as we can about the habitat that our quarry lives in. The app makes it that much easier. You literally just point your camera at any plant whether it’s flowers, grasses, bushes or trees, and it tells you what you’re looking at and uses the data you collect for science! It works for mammals, birds and insects as well!

Especially women have been purposely brainwashed by corporations for decades to only love big perfect invasive non native flowers from stores. That have been grown with millions of gallons or Monsanto-Bayer of pesticides and herbicides to look unnaturally perfect. I’d argue it takes much more effort to go out with your dog and educate yourself where what flowers grow and then pick them for your partner.

And especially bird hunters, guess how you’ll know where Quail, Dove Turkeys like to hang out. I’ll give you a hint….It’s where flowers drop nutritious seeds and attract insect for them to eat! And if you really wanna be smart buy some native wildflower seeds like the quail and dove mix from and actually create more and better habitat by spreading a few hand full of seeds while your out there!

In summary, get your dog into the wild, educate yourself on habitat, help out as a citizen scientist, become a better hunter, and last but not least, do something nice for your woman!

Let’s talk about first aid. Accidents happen and sometimes they are truly unpreventable and risk can’t be mitigated. Lucy and Archer walked with me for just a few hundred yards on a family property that they have literally spent hundreds of miles exploring and training on weekly. Last Saturday we walked a usual route and all the sudden my brother noticed blood in the sand. Both the dogs acted perfectly fine so we assumed it was a fresh wounded animal trail. I noticed how fresh the blood was and decided to take a closer look at the dogs, which were sitting in tall grass at this point, just in case. Well as soon as I lifted Lucies leg, it revealed a literal puddle of blood with significant continuous bleeding profusely (not dripping but flowing) . So much so that I was entirely unable to see any injury or source of the blood. I carried her to the house and immediately got a bottle of saline and started rinsing. I found a small cut initially and thought that was it, but continued exploring in between her pads. This is when I found that her entire metatarsal pad was partially separated from her foot (picture shows about 50% of the injury). I conducted text book first aid by rinsing thoroughly, generously lubing the wound and dressing it with tons of sterile gauze tightly and bandaging the paw and over the next joint before driving to the emergency vet. There, she was placed under anesthesia, cleaned up and sutured. She’ll be out of commission for a few weeks and on crate rest. Stay tuned for a Dispatch on the Walther report on First Aid. I promise you your dog and especially your vet will appreciate properly handled application of first aid.
Also high drive stoic working dogs are great for training and operationally but man… that drive and stoicism are freaking dangerous when they are injured and won’t show any sign of discomfort…. Another upcoming Walther Report topic…
