The first day or two for board and trains can be stressful for some dogs. New environment, new smells, new person taking care of them.

Taz started his board and train yesterday and was pretty nervous with me. He would go into his kennel and “hide” in the back not allowing me to touch him.

With dogs like that we don’t force that engagement. Take it slow, earn the trust and the bond will build. It’s relatively easy if you can be patient.

So how do we build that trust? I sit down in the kennel, allowing the dog to feel me out on their terms. After an extended period of staying as far away from me as possible, he eventually came over and gave my hand and leg a sniff…progress!
I still don’t force anything on him though, take your time! Eventually those sniffs lead to some licks of the hand and face (pictured below). He also plopped right down in my lap for me to pet him.

For dogs like Taz to be successful in a board and train patience is absolutely key. Taking the time to earn the dogs trust will only make training that much easier on both the dog and myself. Looking forward to see how far we can take this guy!
