We posted this last year, but just a friendly reminder for our furry friends and family members because it’s been so extra hot outside lately!!

The DOs and DON’Ts of Heatstroke in Dogs! ‼️🥵

DON’T
• Spray or submerge the animal with cold water. This cause vasoconstriction of blood vessels and pushes all the hot blood to internal organs and can cause severe debilitating organ damage/failure.
• Cover them with ice or dump ice on them.
• Let them try and drink a lot of cold water at once.
• Don’t wait to call the vet thinking they will “come out of it”.

DO
• Try and cool them down SLOW and gradually
• Put alcohol (any type) on the paw pads to draw out heat
• Bring them inside (out of heat) into cool room or AC room
• Place them in front of a cool blowing fan
• Place a small amount of ice in groin area wrapped in towel to slowly cool down blood temperature
• Call the vet immediately!! This is a life threatening emergency and hospitalization with fluids and bloodwork is essential.

Happy 4th of July from Swartz Vet Hospital! We hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday!

‼️ Friendly pet reminders! ‼️
The 4th of July is the MOST COMMON day of the year pets may run away from home due to fear and anxiety! Please:
• Keep your pets indoors and locked in a safe and quiet room. The backyard fence is NOT enough - even if your dog doesn’t normally jump the fence, today is the day is may happen due to anxiety.
• Ensure your pet has their collar and name tag on in case they do run away!
• Keep your dogs away from the food table! This is also a very common day for upset tummies and pancreatitis due to ingesting BBQ meat, grease that has been dumped out into the yard, dinner sides or even foreign bodies from meat bones.
• It’s gonna be a hot day! Heat stroke is also a huge risk today. Please ensure your pet has plenty of access to shade and water.
