1637 miles later we are back home from Port Clinton Ohio. The Green Boys attended the Small Munsterlander Annual Conference. This year’s conference was very well attended, largest group in the past 10 years. Lots of training education and fun activities. Per the usual I did a poor job of getting photos, but I stayed busy on Friday offering a Whoa Training Clinic and Saturday helped out with duck introduction and duck search basics. Poor Lovec did not have a photo op.

Sharing this on behalf the VHDF and Brush Dale Kennel. I ran all three of my dogs a year in this event and had a lot of fun. Definitely worth giving consideration. If you are struggling finding a NAVHDA NA, this is another option.

The Versatile Hunting Dog Federation test we're hosting at Brush Dale at the end of May (5/30 & 5/31) has a lot of openings! We'd very much appreciate you giving VHDF a try. The Central States VHDF is a new chapter. This will be our 2nd test, but without additional entries, we're going to have to cancel 😞

The VHDF HAE and NAVHDA NA "puppy" tests are identical.

The VHDF AHAE is somewhere between the NAVHDA GDT & UT. During the Advanced Hunting Dog Aptitude Evaluation, each dog is evaluated for the aptitudes of Nose, Search, Pointing, and Search behind a duck (tracking a duck across water and then searching for it) as well as having Desire and Cooperation evaluated during each of the specific test subjects. Further, each dog is tested in the trained subjects of Steadiness on Game, Retrieving on Land, Retrieving in Water, Blind Water Entry, and Retrieve by Drag, as well having Obedience evaluated during each of the specific trained test subjects.

The VHDF PE is somewhere between the NAVHDA UT and INV. During the Performance Evaluation, each dog is evaluated in the aptitudes of Nose, Search, Pointing, Search behind a duck, Water search without a duck, and Backing or honoring a bracemate's point. Further, each dog is tested in the trained subjects of Blind Water Retrieve, Steadiness on Game, Retrieving by Land, Water, and Drag, as well as having Desire, Cooperation, and Obedience evaluated throughout the entire test.

VHDF tests are usually pretty low key and a lot of fun. Dogs are scored on a 10-point system against a standard. Scores of 1-8 equate to scores 1-4 in NAVHDA (8=4, 7=3.5, 6=3, 5=2.5, 4=2, and so forth) and scores of 9 or 10 are awarded only for exceptional work. Therefore, the VHDF scoring system provides handlers with more detailed feedback on a dog's performance than does the NAVHDA scoring system. Prizes are not awarded.

Receiving a minimum of a 4 or 5 in all sections of the HAE or AHAE will meet the hunting test requirement for breeding qualification for most US Breed clubs.

To sign up, go to https://versatilehuntingdogfederation.wildapricot.org/event-6484368/Registration. HAE is $125 and AHAE/PE is $175. (You'll need a copy of your puppy's NAVHDA pedigree to register.)

Harley having some fun this evening in the training field.

04/11/2026

Over the past month Harley has continued to develop his hold / carry. As you’ll see in the first video he’s happy and proud to be carrying his mallard dokken. We have also been spending time developing Harley’s straight line (blind) retrieve. This evening he went just short of 200 yards. With the weather and water warming up, the plan is to transition the land retrieve over to the water. We will probably start out at a swim distance of 30 yards and build to 100-120 yards over the next couple of months. This is how I train for the NAVHDA UT duck search. For the UT duck search I like my dog to swim to the far shore and start the search. This also makes training for the NAVHDA Invitational blind retrieve that much easier, Harley will already understand to swim to the far shore.

Today’s training with Harley. In the first 2 videos we continue to reinforce Harley’s retrieve by conducting hold and carry on the walk to the off leash area. Videos 3 and 4 show 185 yard blind retrieves by Lovec and Harley. I send Lovec first as a visual training aid for Harley. I’ve done this in the past and it seems to hold some merit. At least I’m telling myself that. 🤷🏼‍♂️. Harley’s finish on the retrieve was not quite up to par, but right now I’m primarily focused on building his confidence to go away from me on a line until the dokken is found. This is how I start my NAVHDA UT duck search. I’m pushing him out on land and will transfer this to water this spring when the water warms up. I always train my duck search to go to the far shore and then start the search. This makes training for the blind retrieve at the NAVHDA Invitational a natural progression. Video 5 is repetition from a previous video a month or so back showing the continued work on recall using the tone bottom on my Garmin 550 Pro +. I’ll emphasize again, even though Harley has an e-collar on, no stimulation is being used.

Thanks for taking the time to watch.

Last weekend it was Lovec’s son Hansel taking first place in a bird derby. This weekend Jager’s daughter Ash (owned by Jonathon in Georgia) got it done. Winning her bird derby hosted by a joint effort between the Pudelpointer and Small Munsterlander Clubs in the SE. Thank you Jonathan for the time you’ve invested in Ash and a huge shoutout to the Pudelpointer and Small Munsterlander Clubs hosting a joint day with 28 dogs and handlers attending. Sounds like a great day had by all.
