We are so sorry we couldn’t save you. 😢

Alone and abandoned on someone’s property — it’s a call we get more often than most people realize.

We hired a transporter who met with deputies, but the horse had already wandered deep into the woods. Locals saddled up their own horses to help search. And then the arctic blast hit.
He didn’t survive. 😭

We don’t usually share these stories. They’re heartbreaking. But this is the reality of what we do.

Right now, two more horses are in the same critical situation. We are working with law enforcement, and when we’re called out, there’s simply no time to stop and fundraise. A secure monthly budget is what allows us to respond the moment we’re needed. 🙏

❤️ If you enjoy this page...please consider becoming part of the mission.

We run short almost every month — a gap that’s currently being covered by adoption fees and a small handful of incredibly loyal donors.

To understand our budget:
• We have three paid staff, whose salaries combined total $4,000/month.
• Add in feed, vet care, farrier, training, medication, fencing, transportation, bedding, and everything else that horses require…
• It costs us $15,000 every month to keep both rescue facilities running safely and responsibly.

It shouldn’t fall on the shoulders of a few.

🌟 We have 334,000+ followers who love seeing our horses’ stories. If 1,500 gave $10/month or 600 gave $25/month, we could rescue more lives, grow our youth programs, and keep more horses out of danger—forever. 🙏❤

We don’t just give horses a brighter future.

We help the public understand proper care, training, handling, and responsibility — the kind of education that keeps horses in good homes for life.

We have an angel tree at Vaiden Farm Supply! You can pick your horse from the tree and buy their favorite feed or treat and VFS will get it to us. Thanks so much to Jim Hargrove, owner, for letting us set it up, Maureen Johnson for making the angel cards and Cori and Kaylee for setting it up! The horses will be forever grateful. They are having their Christmas Open House tomorrow so be sure to stop by, do some Christmas shopping and get a Loki ornament while you’re at it! Happy Holidays!

Scout was such a sweet and brave boy yesterday! He’s still overcoming his fear of humans and we were so proud of how curious he was of our visitors. We are still hoping someone will want to take him for the Trainer’s Challenge. He needs his feet trimmed but first needs to get used to having his feet handled to make it less traumatic for him and easier for the farrier.

They are thankful for people like you. Their save wasn’t as exciting as if we’d gone to auction or saved from a killpen. But this year has been bad for so many horse owners. They know their horses are at risk of ending up in a bad place. They want us to take them so they can get the care and training they’ve been unable to provide. Their hearts break at the thought of sending them to auction. We are glad we can help.

Dakota, the flashy bay gelding was running loose and the owner could no longer contain him. The vet said his teeth looked like a 30 year old although he believes he’s around 15 or 16. He needed to gain about 100 pounds, not too bad. He’s almost at a weight now where he can be evaluated. Peco’s owner died leaving an elderly widow behind to care for his two stallions. They had to be kept stalled and she was no longer able to lift the bales of hay or feed. The reality is that they could easily hurt her. They had lost weight and with hooves so overgrown, Peco could barely walk. So we took them and provided the care they needed. We don’t just help horses, but those who love them. To all of you who donate, volunteer and share our posts, we are forever grateful! Happy Thanksgiving from Dakota and Peco and all of us at Mississippi Horse Rescue! ❤️

Jess was one of our auction saves from the Knoxville auction. She was run through the ring with a herd of other Rocky Mountain horses. She was weighed and bid on by the pound. A lot of people don’t realize how many horses get shipped for slaughter. She would have been one of them, but we just couldn’t let this pretty girl’s precious life end like that. She is now in training here at Muleshoe getting ready to find her forever trail partner. Come and meet her Saturday at our open house! We will have a couple of horses at the barn for our guests to meet and groom. We hope to see you there!❤️

Friends of Muleshoe

We are a group of horse lovers who have created this page to help the sanctuary horses at Muleshoe Ranch. For 11 years the horses that have called Muleshoe home have been funded through the founders of Mississippi Horses Rescue, Stephanie and Bill Billingsley. They have decided to sell part of Muleshoe Ranch in order to downsize and will be focusing their efforts on Twelve Oaks Horse Farm, the main facility used for Mississippi Horse Rescue (MHR). The Billingsleys have hearts of gold and have been generous enough to help us save horses from all kinds of bad situations including kill pens and auctions. They have generously provided the land, financial resources and hands-on care for these horses. Some only needing Quarantine and evaluation in order to be adopted, but many others have received permanent sanctuary. Many of the MHR horses start their journey to adoption at Muleshoe Ranch. Last year, MHR took in 138 horses, 87 of those horses came from auctions or kill pens. 87 horses would not be here today if the Billingsleys had not allowed the use of their land and personal resources. They are willing to continue to support Muleshoe and keep the land that is used for the rescue horses, but they can no longer afford to cover expenses for both Twelve Oaks and Muleshoe. They have estimated that an additional $2,000 a month needs to be raised to help care for the 30+ horses who are currently residing at Muleshoe. As Friends of Muleshoe, we want to spotlight the horses that reside there and also encourage others to become monthly sponsors of the sanctuary horses.

Please join us in our effort to support the Muleshoe horses. We would like to encourage Muleshoe Friends to become monthly sponsors. If 400 Friends could sign up for only $5 a month donation, the Sanctuary horses of Muleshoe would be covered. Only 200 Friends would be needed for a $10 a month donation. It is very easy to sign up to be a monthly donor! Just click on the link and you can sign up through paypal or credit card. http://www.mississippihorses.org/payment_page.html

One time donations can be made to the direct PayPal account: [email protected]
