🎡🐄 The Fair Is in the Air! 🐖🐑

JOY is ready to enjoy all the fun the North Idaho State Fair has to offer! From riding the Ferris wheel with her favorite four legged friends, to checking out the farm animals, there is fun for everyone!

Prairie Animal Hospital is proud to support our local 4-H youth! These young people put so much time, dedication, and heart into raising and caring for their animals. We love cheering them on, supporting their hard work, and encouraging the next generation to continue learning about animals and responsible animal care.

One of the things we love about the fair is the opportunity for kids and families to see, pet, and interact with farm animals while learning more about the animals and the hard work that goes into caring for them. Just remember, after visiting the animals, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating or touching your face. 🧼👐 This simple step helps keep everyone healthy while enjoying all the fair has to offer!

🎟️ Are you heading to the North Idaho State Fair this year? Tell us what you're most excited to see, or drop a photo from the fair in the comments!

🦇🚨 RABIES ALERT FOR NORTH IDAHO PET OWNERS

Two bats have recently tested positive for rabies in Spokane County, including one with suspected exposure to a domestic animal. The first was confirmed on July 24, 2026, marking the first rabid bat reported in Spokane County this year. A second positive bat was confirmed on August 4, with suspected exposure to a domestic animal.

While these cases are across the border, Spokane is just a short drive from North Idaho, and our communities share the same wildlife. This is an important reminder for pet owners throughout Kootenai County and the surrounding area.

🦇Bats are often misunderstood. They aren't the frightening, blood sucking creatures shown in movies! Most bats in Idaho eat large quantities of insects like moths, flies, and mosquitoes and play an important role in our ecosystem. The goal isn't to fear bats. It's to respect them and know what to do when we encounter them.

If you or your pet have direct contact with a bat or other potentially rabid wildlife:
🚫 Do not handle the animal with your bare hands.
📞 Contact your veterinarian and local Public Health District for guidance.
🦇 Keep your pet away from the bat and prevent further contact.
💉 Make sure your pet's rabies vaccination is current.
⚠️ Bat bites can be extremely small and may not be obvious.

Rabies is fatal once clinical signs develop, so prevention and prompt action after a potential exposure are extremely important.

With rabid bats recently confirmed just across the border, now is a great time to check your pet's rabies vaccination status!

Respect bats. Protect your pets. Protect our community.❤️🐾
Remember: Rabies doesn't stop at the state line. 🦇

⚡ Hail Zeus! King of Olympus and Champion Ball Chaser!

Zeus's favorite toy? A ball. ⚾ His favorite activities? Chasing a ball, holding a ball, staring at a ball, or swimming and chasing water (sometimes with a ball). Basically, if there’s a ball or water involved, Zeus is ALL IN! In fact, Zeus loves water so much that his parents have to keep him on a leash around it, or he’ll happily swim off to infinity chasing his own water splashes!

Zeus doesn't have a favorite treat. He will eat aaaalmost anything... except for broccoli 🥦

He absolutely loves meeting new people and animals of all kinds. And while he may look a little intimidating at first, don’t let that fool you. Zeus is a **big teddy bear** at heart. This sweet boy has a few nicknames ("Zeus-y Bear" or "Fat Head"), but they all fit this lovable goofball perfectly! ❤🐾

🚨 Pet Safety Alert: Algae Blooms in Hayden Lake & Fernan Lake 🚨

Panhandle Health has issued an advisory through mid-October for *Fernan Lake and the north end of Hayden Lake* due to a large amount of harmful and potentially toxic cyanobacteria, also known as "blue green algae".

Pets are at increased risk because they may drink the water, lick toxins from their fur, or eat toxic algae mats. Exposure can cause serious illness and, in severe cases, can be fatal.

🐾 Avoid water that appears:
• Discolored or unusually green
• Covered with surface scum
• Streaky or covered with green slime

⚠️ **If your pet gets into affected water:**
Rinse them thoroughly with fresh water and prevent them from licking their fur.
If they develop vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, weakness, tremors, seizures, difficulty breathing, or other concerning symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.

Remember: When in doubt, stay out!

For current information and active Idaho harmful algal bloom advisories, visit the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality’s cyanobacteria and harmful algal blooms page.

🐾🧀🐱 Say hello to the one and only Mr. Cheddar Cheese!

With his gorgeous orange and white coat, it's easy to see how he earned such a perfectly cheesy name!

Mr. Cheddar Cheese is always on a mission to find the highest perch in the room, where he can keep a watchful eye over his kingdom. When he's not supervising from the windowsill, you'll find him curled up in his cat tree, "helping" his mom with work, or proudly carrying his favorite Mr. Mousy toys around to show off his latest catch. This charming kitten loves everyone he meets... **except for the mailman!** 📬😹

We think it's safe to say Mr. Cheddar Cheese has perfected the art of ruling the house while stealing hearts along the way.

Drop a 🧀 in the comments if Mr. Cheddar Cheese made you smile!

With wildfire smoke affecting air quality across North Idaho, now is a good time to take a few extra precautions to help keep your pets safe.

❤️ Remember: If it's not safe for you to breathe the air outside, it's not safe for your pets either. Take extra precautions with flat-faced breeds, pets with heart or lung disease, puppies, kittens, and senior pets.
