Although this picture looks scary, these bites are from a small fly commonly called “no-see-ums" (Ceratopogonidae), buffalo gnats, or black flies. Black Flies are most active around streams, rivers, and in wooded areas or tall grass. The rings from the bite typically resolve on their own in a few days with no treatment needed. If you are concerned or the bite is causing your pet discomfort, you're always more than welcome to send us a picture of the spot and we can guide you in the right direction!

Now that we are finally enjoying some nice weather, it is a great reminder that parasites are back too...It's the bites that you can't see that you have to worry about! Flea infestations can cause anemia and also are vectors for other intestinal parasites. Ticks can cause Lyme disease or tick paralysis that can cause serious issues if not treated. These parasites are very good at hiding under your pet's fur and sometimes you won't see them until the damage is done! Prevention is the best way to keep your pet safe from these diseases!

Request your flea/tick preventative from us today!

Send us a text or give us a call (we can even show you the tick jar we've already started this season...)

Happy Saturday! Today we are putting the spotlight on "Zoe" the 3-year old shepherd. ✨ Zoe’s mom shared that they rescued Zoe who "is now forever safe and adored. Zoe has truly been a blessing from above!" She loves long walks, chasing her tail, barking at mysterious noises, and surprisingly… bath time! 🛁 Her contagious energy and adorable head tilts keep her family smiling every single day.🐾
Zoe is so honored to be our Pet Spotlight and hopes her photos brighten your day as much as she brightens the lives of everyone around her 💖

Happy Cinco de Mayo from all of us at Prairie Animal Hospital! 🌮🐾

While you are enjoying tacos and time with friends this Cinco de Mayo, don't forget that tick season has arrived! Our “tick-quila” jar might look festive, but it is actually filled with creepy crawlies found on our patients! 👀
