As many of you know, there has been an EHV-1, Equine Herpesvirus, outbreak mainly in the southern states. This is an extremely contagious disease that should not be taken lightly. It can be lethal.
Disease knows NO borders so make sure you are being proactive to keep your horses healthy, even if you don't plan on travelling anywhere.
EHV is a common virus in horses. There are a few strains of the disease that show multiple different symptoms. This particular strain is focused on neurologic signs. Here are a few things to look for...
- Weakness
- Wobbliness
- Difficulty getting up off the ground or standing
- Leaking urine
- Elevated temperature
How is the disease spread??
- Horse-to-horse contact
- Contaminated equipment, handlers, clothing, footwear and surfaces.
- Droplets from coughing
Things you can do to keep your horse safe...
- STAY PUT!!! This is the most important tip. Unless there is an extremely urgent reason for you to be transporting your horse, stay home.
- If you have been around other horses lately, keep a close eye on your animals. Watch for any signs that are different from their normal behavior.
- Take a re**al temperature. A normal range is from 99-101.5 degrees. If you are getting an elevated reading, call your vet immediately.
- If you plan on doing any travelling with your horse during the winter months, make sure you update your flu/rhino vaccine.
Being smart about this is what's going to keep everyone healthy and safe. If you have any questions at all, make sure you call your vet right away. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) is another great source of education. You can find them on your social media platforms.
