In honor and remembrance of those who gave their lives in service to our Nation, you are not forgotten πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

On this Memorial Day Weekend, we bow our heads to remember the heavy price paid by both the courageous Americans and the loyal animals who served alongside them in the darkest hours of war. We honor the Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and Airmen/women who faced unimaginable terrors and gave their lives for our freedom, and we remember the silent, devoted animals who endured the pain, confusion, and brutality of the battlefield without a voice. Bound by duty and love, they suffered and fell together in the service of our nationβ€”may we never forget their shared sacrifice, their ultimate loss, and the profound depth of their devotion.

Freedom is paid for with blood and loss of life, no creature escapes the cruelty of war. Only the dead have seen the end of war. Honor their sacrifice and live a life worthy of it.

Be sure to check Yourself for ticks after handling hay.

Ticks love to hide in hay bales. Since Pennsylvania consistently leads the nation in tick activity and Lyme disease cases, handling farm-fresh hay or using it for fall decorative displays carries a high risk of encountering deer ticks, dog ticks, and tiny, poppy seed-sized nymphs. I got two ticks off me today.

Because mice and other small rodents frequently nest in hay, they bring ticks directly into the bales. Ticks can survive inside them for long periods, waiting to hitch a ride on the next hostβ€”whether that is livestock, pets, or you.

Actionable Safety Steps:
Inspect Bales: Visually check hay for signs of pests or mice nests before bringing it into garages, barns, or near your home.
Wear Protective Clothing: When moving, breaking apart, or feeding with hay, tuck your pants into your socks and wear gloves or arm gaiters.
Use Repellent: Treat your boots and work clothes with an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET, or use Permethrin to kill ticks on contact.
Tumble Dry High: If you suspect you have been exposed while working with hay, put your clothes in a hot dryer for 10–15 minutes. Washing alone does not kill ticks.
Check Yourself and Pets: Always perform a full-body tick check after handling hay. Pay close attention to your scalp, armpits, waistline, and behind the knees.

I have chronic lyme disease, so I try to be vigilant.
