Steeplechase trainers continue to make their presence known on the flat racing stage, and this weekend offered another strong example of that crossover.

Passing Game — trained by longtime steeplechase horseman Ricky Hendriks — drew broadcaster attention ahead of Saturday's Grade 3 stakes race at Woodbine in Canada. Passing Game is owned by Nashville’s own Virginia “Gigi” Lazenby, a familiar supporter of both steeplechase and flat racing. When the gates opened, he delivered a strong effort and finished in a dead heat for third — meaning two horses hit the wire at the exact same moment and shared the placing. It’s uncommon, and it always sparks conversation among fans. Earlier this season, Passing Game also competed in the Far Hills flat race, showing the conditioning typical of steeplechase-connected runners.

Across the industry, many steeplechase trainers and owners are earning recognition on the flat side, with horses performing at major meets and showcasing the depth of skill throughout our steeplechase community. We’re proud to see this visibility extend beyond our sport and, in turn, support the nonprofits connected to steeplechasing.
