Well I meant to post but that plan got interrupted so how about instead? Teach your horses to load in a trailer, folks. And I mean teach them to load No. Matter. What. Teach them so well that they can load in an unfamiliar trailer with unfamiliar horses, by an unfamiliar person, while adrenaline is skyrocketing. Teach them and refresh the skill on the regular if you don't haul frequently. And on that note, teach them to be easy to catch.
Case in point: we live in very dry state. Our neighboring field caught fire yesterday and was heading towards our house and barn. I have 4 client horses here that have hauled in pairs but never all together. They loaded in a snug trailer with no hesitation and waited patiently until it was safe to unload (thankfully the fire was put out before it got to us, although it was way too close for comfort). None of the 4 are here for trailer training, but it's a part of the program for every horse here.
In other words-- an easy-to-load horse is convenient in everyday scenarios, and life saving in emergencies.
