Our friends at Kyrami Canine - Formerly The Husky House have an amazing talent in sharing such valuable information about the health of our furry family members ♥️.
Somehow in the dog world, “my dog only gets bathed once or twice a year” became a weird flex. It’s not.
Routine grooming — yes, including baths — is a basic part of responsible dog ownership. Dogs live in our homes, on our furniture, in our beds, and most importantly…inside their own skin every single day. Skin and coat health matter just as much as nutrition and vet care.
The most common arguments I hear are:
“Bathing strips their natural oils.”
→ Overbathing with harsh products can, yes. But using quality shampoos on an appropriate schedule actually helps maintain healthy skin and coat. Dirt, dead skin, yeast, allergens, saliva, urine residue, and impacted undercoat sitting on the skin for months isn’t healthier.
“My dog cleans themselves naturally.”
→ Dogs are not cats. They roll in dirt, oil up, shed, sweat through paw pads, collect environmental allergens, and trap debris in coat. Especially double coated, curly coated, or dense coated breeds.
“They don’t need grooming.”
→ Every dog needs grooming. The amount just varies by breed and coat type. Nails, ears, skin checks, brushing, deshedding, sanitary care, and bathing are all grooming. Neglect isn’t “natural.”
“Bathing causes skin issues.”
→ In many cases, lack of proper maintenance causes more issues. Impacted coat, trapped moisture, bacteria, yeast buildup, and untreated skin irritation thrive in dirty, poorly maintained coats.
And honestly? A clean dog is usually a more comfortable dog. Regular grooming helps owners catch lumps, injuries, parasites, hot spots, ear infections, dental decline, and coat changes early. It keeps matting from becoming painful. It reduces excessive shedding and dander. It improves quality of life.
No one is saying every dog needs weekly spa days. But acting like avoiding grooming somehow makes someone a better or more “natural” dog owner is strange to me. Proper maintenance is part of caring for the animal you chose to own.
A well groomed dog is not a vain dog.
It’s a cared for dog.
