FRS Sorter Spotlight Amy Sodrel. When Ranch Sorting came into Amy Sodrelβs life in November of 2022, she had never ridden a horse before. What started as her husband Dannyβs idea to get back in the saddle quickly turned into a life-changing family adventure.
Danny made a few calls to friends who owned sorting horses and soon told Amy he had found one he wanted her to try β just to see if she could actually ride. They tried the horse, bought herβ¦ and then bought two more. Just like that, they were all in. The very next weekend, Amy found herself at her first show.
But for Amy, sorting has always been about more than competition. The best part? Doing it together as a family. The shared weekends, the learning curves, and the small victories have made it something truly special.
Her journey hasnβt been without challenges. One of Amyβs biggest pet peeves is hearing experienced riders complain about drawing a beginner. She makes it a point to say loud enough for others to hear, βJust remember, we were all beginners at some point.β
She knows that feeling firsthand. In her early days, she heard the whispers. It discouraged her so much that she once told Danny she didnβt want to ride anymore. But he encouraged her to stick with it and promised she would learn how to read cows with time.
Today, Amy shares the advice that carried her through:
If youβre just starting out and feeling discouraged β stay with it. Growth comes with grit, and every great sorter was once a beginner.
