July 4th is just around the corner, are you and your pets ready for the booms, bangs, and bright lights?

While fireworks and festivities are fun for us, they can be downright terrifying for our furry friends. Every year, countless pets go missing after being spooked by loud noises. A little preparation now can make all the difference in keeping them safe and calm.

If your pet takes anxiety medication, NOW is the time to check your supply and request any necessary refills. Don’t wait until the fireworks are lighting up the sky to realize you’re out!

Next, double-check your pet’s microchip information. If your dog or cat manages to escape during the excitement, a quick scan of a microchip with up-to-date info can help bring them back home. Make sure their collars have current ID tags, too, but keep in mind, collars can fall off. A microchip is permanent.

Jellybean, Winifiried, Macaroni, Roxxanne, and Daisy are already ahead of the game! Their paw-rents refilled their anxiety meds and updated their microchip info. And Chewy and Loki the cats? They’ll be staying safe and sound indoors with current chips.

The safest place for your pet during fireworks? Inside the house; windows closed, maybe some soothing music playing, and plenty of comfort from you. Even a tall fence won’t stop a panicked dog from trying to flee loud sounds!

Taking a few simple steps NOW can help ensure your pet stays safe, calm, and exactly where they belong; right at home with you.

5. Be Patient and Consistent: House training takes time and consistency. There will be good days and perhaps some setbacks. Don't get discouraged! Stick to your schedule, supervise diligently, reward successes, and clean up accidents calmly. With patience and a consistent approach, your dog will learn successful bathroom training.

Key number 4 seems simple, but worth mentioning:

4. Clean Up Accidents Thoroughly (Without Scolding): Accidents happen! If you find a mess inside, clean it up immediately and thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner. This type of cleaner eliminates the odor, which can attract your dog back to the same spot. Avoid scolding or punishing your dog for accidents. They don’t understand and it can create fear and apprehension, making housetraining harder. Simply clean it up and resolve to be more vigilant next time.

Next key on house training:

3. Reward Success Immediately and Enthusiastically: The moment your dog finishes eliminating outside, praise them enthusiastically ("Good potty!", "Yes!") and offer a high-value treat, play or a walk. This creates a strong positive association with going potty outdoors. Reward immediately so they connect the act with the praise and treat.

Next key to successful house training:

2. Supervise, Supervise, Supervise! Prevention is key! When you can't actively supervise your dog, they should be in a confined area like a crate or a puppy-proofed room. When you are supervising in the room with them, have a leash on them and attach it to you or allow them to drag it behind them. This limits opportunities to have accidents unnoticed. When you are watching them, you'll be able to spot the tell-tale signs they need to go (circling, sniffing the ground, restlessness), pick up their leash and whisk them outside quickly.
