Sometimes I have to remind myself perfection isn't achievable. But soundness is. And at the end of the day what's more important? I have beat myself up more than I care to admit over a certain stinker-bell. But she is sound. Runs. Plays. And is living rent free at my house.

On to the important stuff....

My yearly horse trip is coming in June.

From now until mid July my schedule is packed. Some openings. But minimal.

Not taking new clients.

If you need to get scheduled. Please do now. Like I said minimal openings the next 4-6 weeks.

Thanks for being awesome!

This!

This!

This time of year, springtime in the northern hemisphere, if I see any “sudden” or new hoof problems, I assume it’s the grass.

Is your horse moving a little slower than previously? A little “lazier” all the sudden?

Is your horse suddenly less willing to canter or trot in turn out?

Is your horse now picking their path a bit more on the trail, and avoiding stones more than usual?

Do you have a resurgence of thrush, wall cracks or chips, white line disease, or hoof quality issues?

Is that old on again/off again lameness suddenly “on” again?

Does your horse turn a little slower than before, and you think it’s just their arthritis suddenly flaring up (even though the weather is warming up)?

It might be the grass.

If your horse has ANY access to grass this time of year, even if it’s just the grass edging in a “dry lot” paddock, and you see any change in hoof comfort, soundness, or hoof quality- it might be the grass.

I know your horses love it. I know you love to see them happy. I know for some “they never had issues with the grass before.”

Just trust me. Trial your horse off fresh spring grass and see if you notice any difference in comfort or new hoof growth at the hairline.

I’m telling you. It might be the grass.

Photo of one of my “grass free tracks” with a little bit of grass edging which could even be too much for a super sensitive horse.

This is crazy!

This is crazy!

I’m struggling to find the right words and how to introduce this sweet baby. There’s so much to discuss but today we have just tried to process, address immediate needs and then we will go from there.

I know I said earlier the baby was a girl, which is what we were told but he is a precious little boy, and he was born with only 3 legs.

Once we picked him up he was taken immediately to Dr Longoria’s. She drew blood, did a full assessment and X-ray of the shoulder where his left front leg should be. There is actually the start of a very tiny underdeveloped leg there, it just stopped growing for some reason. This is not something she has ever seen nor the other professionals we have consulted today. Due to that, there are more what ifs and maybes than there are “we can do this or thats”. What we do know is today, he’s a fighter and has a very strong will to live. At only 3 days old, he’s learned to compensate and can walk, and get up and down on his own. He’s bright and curious just as a foal should be, and incredibly sweet.

I don’t think anyone would have faulted us for euthanizing him today, and many will fault us for not doing so today as well. We held off on making any decision about him until we could see him for ourselves and see what Dr Longoria felt as well. This is also why I did not post what his birth defect was or a photo in my earlier post. I like to come to you all with as much information as possible and be prepared to answer questions to the best of our ability. I feel I’m prepared to do that now.

We made the decision to bring him home to the rescue as TODAY, he is thriving. This could change at any time, and we will not allow him to suffer or prolong any suffering he may have in the future. Being there is no research to look to, no professional we have found with any previous experience, this was a somewhat hard decision partly in knowing that there will be some outrage but having this precious baby of my arms and knowing he wants to live, it’s the decision we made.

There is no hope of a prosthesis so let’s please not get deep into that. We contacted the best in the world before we ever took possession of him, and it’s just not an option. There is nothing there to attach a prosthetic to, and if there was, it would likely fail due to not bringing able to bend it, inhibiting him further from laying down or getting up.

He is drinking very well from a bucket and caught onto that pretty quickly. The best I have ever seen a foal do. This was encouraging. We do believe his quality of life would greatly improve with a nurse mare and that is in the works. His life most likely will not surpass a few months or at least weaning age as he will gain weight and become heavier and that’s when more problems will arise, but we would love for him to have the very best life possible while he is on this earth. What things do you put on a baby horses bucket list when life is just not fair sometimes but you want to make the best of it? Nature is wild and things happen, but he made it here and we want to chose to celebrate the time that he has however long that may be.

We take in a lot of hospice cases, but a newborn hospice case is a first for us. How special it is to get to provide this for him though, and as worried as I was, I was very joyful after being with him. All God’s creatures ❤️.

I will update more as we know more. For now, what should we name such a special little boy? I will not name him anything to do with him only having 3 legs.

This mare is amazing and has overcome so much. She's so sweet. Amazing Grace Equine Sanctuary you've done a great job with her! For those that don't know, Carmen had a massive injury on her leg. When the wounds were healing, a big concern was her ability to lay down and get up. Horses need to get rem sleep. Part of why they need to lay down. She's doing it all.

Foot of the week. This mare has some metabolic issues. She gets done every 4 weeks. We've come a long way. And she has been sound now for some time. Change in environment and diet provided everything she has needed.

Often times when feet aren't looking or performing right, the first person we blame is the farrier. But I'm here to tell you that I'm a small piece to a complex puzzle. There are a lot of moving pieces that create great feet.

Diet. If you've known me for any amount of time, I've probably talked to you about feed. You are feeding the foot. Sugar. There is nothing beneficial about it. Causes inflammation. What does inflammation cause?

Laminitis
Equine Metabolic Syndrome
Insulin Resistance
Cushings

Then we can start getting into the genetic issues like PSSM 2.

Even if your horse isn't any of the above. Sugar is not beneficial. Especially when we have so many things on the market that are so easily accessible.

Cough. Custom Equine Nutrition.

Genetics. Poor conformation means there is a higher chance of poor feet. I can't fix genetics.

Environment. No environment will ever be perfect. It's too dry. Too wet. Too rocky. Too muddy. Too small. Too much grass. The list can go on. There are many ways to improve the environment- mainly footing. But that also comes with a cost. And if your husband isn't handy like mine, that cost can be astronomical.

Now let's talk about farrier work.

What kind of schedule do you keep? Is it 4 weeks? 6 weeks? 8 weeks? Longer? The more often your horse sees the farrier, the better their feet are. But this isn't a one shoe fits all idea either. Some horses don't grow as fast as others. Some horses have issues that others don't.

I will say the horses that stay on a 4-6 week rotation have the healthiest feet.

I guess what I am saying is, look at the whole horse. The entire picture. Food. Environment. Workload. Farrier. Schedule. Genetics. Conformation. Farriers are getting harder to find. If a client isn't willing to stay on a schedule most farriers won't keep them on their books.

I will be getting into all the things listed above in the next few weeks so stay tuned and happy Thursday
