It’s been a busy vet week for us at the ranch. Including our girl Sandy that crossed to the rainbow bridge, we’ve had 7 dogs at vet appointments this week. Stormy, Turbo, Stella and Trixi all had their yearly check-ups and thankfully all are heart worm negative. Cleo and lil Buck received boosters and health certificates preparing them for their upcoming transport to Iowa. The pups’ health and comfort are always top priorities for us.🐾

Today was one of those days that we don’t like but we know it’s inevitable. We had to say goodbye to another senior pup, Sandy (aka Sandra). Sandy was a Black Mouth Cur and 1 of our 8 OPs (original pups) that moved with us to the ranch. We only have 3 OPs left with us now. Sandy was a stray that we rescued off the streets in Rosharon 12 years ago at which time it was believed she was approximately 2 years old. With our seniors, we monitor them very closely and watch for signs that tell us it’s their “time” and today Sandy clearly showed us it was her time. We know she’s been reunited with her brothers at the rainbow bridge and back to being in charge and keeping her brothers Mitchell, Major and Mac in line. We will definitely miss her but we know she is no longer struggling and suffering which gives us some comfort. RIP our feisty Sandra girl. 🫶🏻🐾

Look who stood up to eat at their food bowl this morning! Chip seems to be starting to respond to the meds. It’s still early to tell if this will work long term but this is at least hopeful. We know we can’t cure him but if we can give him more happy and comfortable days, then that’s a win in our book. 🙏🏻🫶🏻🐾

Roxy’s would like to introduce this sweet lil pup named Buck. He was named by the Good Samaritan family that found him and his two siblings and took them in until help was found. Buck will be hanging out with us at the ranch for a bit before transporting to Iowa under Tails in Transit rescue. He’s a sweet, playful, energetic pup and will be a great addition to a new family soon! He’s already potty trained too! Watch for more updates on this bundle of fun!🐾

Our senior boy Chip is having a rough time right now. He just ate a little bit of food for the first time in 4 days. I reached out to our vet over the weekend because I knew something was wrong when he began rejecting all food and treats. So he advised us to check and monitor his temp which remained a low grade fever but within safe parameters. Monday morning started the first of 3 vet appointments in the past two days. It was discovered yesterday that he has a painful abdomen. His blood work looked good but clearly something was wrong. Potential possibilities were pancreatitis, gallbladder issues or even liver. X-rays did not reveal anything so further diagnostic testing was needed. So we scheduled him for an abdominal ultrasound the following morning (today) at another facility. It is there that it was discovered Chip has a mass around his adrenals. This is causing him nausea (loss of appetite) and pain. So we are at that crossroads yet again. We went straight back to our regular vet with the diagnostic report and with Chip and asked for help to manage his pain and control the nausea. We always want to try to obtain good quality of life and give them a chance before reaching the point of making that hard decision. He literally was acting and eating normally on Friday until Friday night he didn’t. So Chip received a pain injection and an anti-nausea injection this afternoon. So I was happy to see him eat a little bit tonight. These next few days will tell us if this management plan will work or not.🙏🏻🐾🙏🏻

Roxy’s would like to introduce our newest resident, Lillie! There are so many dogs and cats being euthanized at shelters right now. While they are all heartbreaking, Lillie’s video (formerly known as Kiara) really got to us. She was shut down and didn’t even want to make eye contact. She felt defeated and scared not knowing why she was locked up at the scary shelter. So we decided she was the one we were going to save.

She’s young and hasn’t been spayed yet and she also has an upper respiratory infection right now. With some time to decompress and get all of her vetting done, she will be ready for a home of her own.

What we do know is she is sweet and submissive. When she gets petted, she rolls over for belly rubs. She also loves to give her paw for a shake.

Roxy’s recently took in this big boy who we are calling Cash. He had been adopted from the shelter but the adopter was unable to keep him. When a rescue friend reached out about his situation, we did not want him to have to return to the shelter and risk possible euthanasia. So we said yes and brought him to Roxy’s. He is the absolute best boy! He is so laid back and easy going. Honestly, I haven’t even heard him bark. The shelter had him listed as a Cane Corso and the vet thinks he might be a mastiff mix. Either way and as much as we love him already, he is young and deserves a family of his own. The good news is he is already neutered and heartworm negative. He’s already reached 100 # and still gaining. He will be ready for adoption soon. Stay tuned for more on sweet Cash!

A day in the life at our ranch! Having a senior dog sanctuary is much more than “saving a dog and feeding it.” These pics are what occurred yesterday alone. A gate and a fence panel had to be replaced due to rot. We also wrap all exterior panels with “snake wire” which helps prevent unwanted creatures from entering a kennel. Paver stones were added in a kennel that gets muddy when it rains. Dead and dying trees near kennels have to be cut down. The a/c in our main kennel went out and had to be immediately replaced with a new one. Cot cover replacements are done on the regular. Once the frame on a cot becomes unfixable, we are gradually replacing them with heavy duty weight graded kuranda beds and those on average are about $150 a piece. Until then, we replace the covers. 10 dogs were provided medication. Pictured is Olive for cuteness. She’s one of our senior hospice pups.
