Grooming is an important thing to add to the socialization list. Especially if they are a breed that will require regular lifetime grooming.

Socialization of a puppy is so misunderstood sometimes, and even though you’ve seen me talk about it again and again, I repeat it with every puppy you see me raise because I really want to highlight that it doesn’t matter what the breed or size of the dog is, this information is critical for humans raising a dog.

The socialization period - which used to be called the “critical period” - is a period of time in which your puppy is most accepting of new things. It’s when they are gathering all the information they can about their surroundings and the environment they will exist in for the rest of their lives. Things that are familiar and exposed to them in this period buffer them against them developing extreme fear or anxiety from them later on. It DOESNT prevent behavior issues completely, but it absolutely can lessen their severity. The period length varies based on the individual dog, but also we’ve discovered different breeds have different lengths of this period which is super important to be aware of when choosing your dog. It typically ends by 12-14 weeks, but can go as long as 16 or be as short as 10.

Think about everything we want our dogs to do with us in society today. Beach walks, walks downtown, restaurants, shopping trips, car rides, etc etc. it’s a lot more than we used to ask of dogs, so as a result, our socialization efforts need to be more than it used to be too. 150 years ago we didn’t worry so much about our dogs needing to be okay with the sounds of blenders, or motorcycles or understanding what the Amazon prime van meant, but that’s all changed now. So if we want our dogs comfortable with the world we live in today, we have to show them what it’s all about early, positively and frequently.

That means when raising my puppies, my goal is to expose them to all of this world, and all the things they are probably going to see, hear, feel and watch at least once. No, it’s not about taking them to the dog park, or letting kids climb all over them, it’s about showing them that shiny floors exist, school buses make loud noises, and joggers may run by them quickly sometimes.

Playing and meeting other dogs is absolutely part of it too, but in carefully structured ways, and with supervision. Just because my puppy has dogs at home to play with, doesn’t mean they don’t need to meet lots and lots of other dogs to learn about all the various ways they play, and communicate.

But it doesn’t just have to be meeting dogs. It can be just watching them too. Yes, other dogs will walk past you and that’s okay. Same with people carrying bags or pushing strollers. This is all my job in teaching my puppy that the world is big and has lots to see and explore.

Genetics play a role in the success of socialization also: it is NOT all in how you raise a puppy, they have predispositions and personalities as individual as we do, BUT even if I’m working with a shy puppy, or a confident puppy, the goal is still the same. I may just go at a different pace and change my tactics a little. This goes for breeds too, dog breeds I know who have a likelihood of developing strange danger (ahem, Aslan/joker) I may handle how I expose them to new people as a puppy differently than let’s say a breed that wants to be the town mayor (ahem, winter)

At 10.5 weeks old and 2 weeks home, here’s a list of places Corduroy has already gone and been exposed to at least once-

Home Depot
The Beach
Downtown concord
Rollins park
Campground
The Camper
Marshall’s
Sandys
NMBDT
The barn
Puppy play and train
Day training
Tjmaxx
Playground
Basketball court

He has seen bicycles, boats, strollers. He has heard motorcycles and kids screaming and dogs barking and basketballs bouncing. He has walked on shiny floors and sand and wood chips and tarps. He has met close to 100 new dogs and even more people. This exposure will continue at a heavy pace until he is about 12-14 weeks old, where the socialization period will likely start to close, then it will be about maintenance and continuing positive associations but also being prepared for the adolescent crazy phase to begin.

Every puppy I do this with teaches me something new, and Corduroy is no exception, but I can tell you from raising not only my own dogs, but also the boarding puppies and shelter puppies I do this with too, that is worth every extra hour I need to put in.

If you want more help on learning about socializing your puppy, take our perfect puppy starter workshop - we hold it monthly via zoom and go over all this and more!

Fireworks can be frightening to dogs because of the loud bangs, the flashing lights and unpleasant strong scent of explosives. Dogs hear more than twice as many frequencies as humans, and they can also hear sounds roughly four times further away.

With multiple bangs occurring from numerous displays, dogs will rarely be able to pinpoint where the booming explosions are coming from. It must be truly terrifying not knowing what an explosion is, where it’s coming from, or where and when the next one is going to be.

Happy Sunday Friends ✌️ I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend.

I am going to try to make this post as quick as possible but it has come to my attention that I need to make a few things well known about me and my business. Please know that this is the ONE and ONLY time I will ever make a post like this and quite frankly it is very upsetting to me that I even feel the need to do so.

To those of you that enjoy darkening the doorstep of small businesses and being ungodly disrespectful and rude; this is NOT the place for it and I am not the person for it so please find your way out. My policies are my policies for good reason and will remain as such. If you are late to your appointment and don't bother to call, answer your phone when I call or even bother to mention it until I do, you WILL be charged a late fee IF I even agree to take you at that point. If you no show, no call to your appointment and don't bother to answer when I call you every other time you have an appointment, you WILL be required to pay for half of your missed appointment and possibly refused further service. I do of course know that sometimes things happen and you can't make it and that is completely understandable, I am always willing to work with you if that does happen. This however is directly in response to those who consistently repeat the offence with no consideration to the other parties involved and simply do it because they can or don't want to be bothered with being respectful. The same applies if you are constantly cancelling your appointment less than 24hrs before your appointment. Because I am mostly one on one I have a very tight schedule. When someone purposefully shows up late or doesn't show up at all I either wind up behind schedule and stressed out or I completely lose out on money needed to pay my bills. It is also not fair to an existing or new client that may have been able to take your spot. It truly is not hard to be kind and respectful. I treat my clients both 2 legged and four legged with the utmost respect and expect the same it return. If you decide you don't like my policies and decide to be disrespectful towards me and give me attitude I can promise you with 100% certainty that I will match your attitude and give it right back. Furthermore, being rude and condescending whether by review, in person or hearsay will never be tolerated nor will it ever affect me in a way that benefits you. In closing, my goal is always to give my clients both human and animal the best of me and the best service that I can possibly give. I also strive to be an example for the grooming, veterinary and animal health and wellfare industry that we as professionals are professionals for a reason. Our clients expect the best from us and in order to give them that we have to be our best. We are not our best selves when we are being berated by customers who do not give us the respect that we worked tirelessly to earn. With that I end this post and want to wish everyone a wonderful Memorial Day and a huge THANK YOU to the brave men and women that have lost their lives to keep us safe! Thank you and God Bless!

This applies to groomers as well. Many groomers including myself will not even attempt to touch your dog if it behaves like that. It is not our responsibility to teach your dog how to act. It's yours. So please, if you love your dog do the right thing and be responsible. If you can't, dont own a dog until you can. If you don't know how, that is why trainers exist; they don't just train dogs, they train you how to train your dog. Also as a dog trainer myself please do not assume that taking your dog to puppy classes or obedience classes means that your dog is forever trained. You have to work with your dog consistently in and out of classes and through every stage of life. Training doesn't work if you are not consistent.

Hey Friends!

I wouldn't normally ask this here because it is completely non business related, but I am desperate!

Does anyone know of a Chiropractor in the Lebanon area that does straight chiropractic? I am not interested in mixed chiro where they use all kinds of treatments (ie. Imaging, or any tool other than their hands) If anyone knows of someone who would fit that description, please send me their info, and THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH in advance! 😁🥰

Something to watch out for as warmer weather keeps moving in!

As Spring starts, we are getting more and more phone calls about red bites on your dogs stomach. We wanted to give everyone this information, these are a type of fly bite, and dogs generally get them from laying in the grass. They look terrible, but usually do not bother the dogs. They heal quickly on their own, and do not require any treatment. These flies are usually around for a few weeks every spring and then go away. We hope this eases any worry that you may have had about your own dog!
If you have any concerns please feel free to call the clinic for more information!

Good Morning Friends.

I wanted to give everyone a heads up before it goes into effect.

Beginning May 1st, I am faced with the difficult decision to raise my prices. Due to the rising costs of literally everything at this point, I have no choice. The hourly base price for full groom services and bath services is what will be going up. Everything else ( add-ons, spa, and walk-in services) will remain the same for now. If anyone needs to know what their new price will be please reach out to me and I will be happy to let you know. Thank you all ❤️

This happy boy Blu got his first haircut with us this week. Mom was a little nervous because he used to get really stressed over grooming and his last groomer was actually unable to finish him. After a few bath appointments of teaching him right and wrong and allowing him to explore his curiosity (as long as it was safe to) and build his confidence, we decided to give a haircut another try and he did AMAZING!! He was such a good boy. Can we give Blu some love for being such a good and brave boy! 😍💙🐾

Girl With The Dogs on TikTok

I wanted to share this video here because it is so true and the things she says apply to me as well. I am an honest groomer and I will never stop putting your pets first. I will never not tell you how your pet behaves or how to correct it or work with it. If you are looking for a quick, cheap, do what you say no matter what kinda groom from a groomer who doesn't care, then you've come to the wrong place.

These situations are one of the unfortunate sides of pet grooming and it doesn't apply to just old dogs. There are many reasons why a dog may be refused service the biggest being agression and following that, being so terrified that they put themselves in danger by continuing.

Also with sharing this video I wanted to share some important advice that I have been meaning to share. And I do apologize in advance, its going to be a long read.

Since opening just one year ago I have recieved 2 nasty reviews from clients who's dogs I had to refuse further service (both large dogs). Both owners claimed that they understood my reasonings as I explained it and both still proceeded to bash me and my ability to handle their pet after the fact. In both cases the dogs did not have a social understanding of the grooming process and were terrified of the most important part, blow drying. Being large, very heavy breeds, a full blown freak out while attached to a table can be extremely dangerous for both the dog and the groomer. Since I am a one person operation, I do not have anyone to help contain a large dog that reacts like that. As you can imagine a situation like that can get out of hand very fast and can result in multiple dangerous scenarios. For one being that the dog could be serioisly injured from either choking themselves with the collar while trying to get off the table or absolutely worst case they choke themselves and pull a very heavy table on top of themselves. Both of these could also result in the groomer being injured trying to stop either of those things from happening and the dog would only become more terrified. This is why it is soooo very important to socialize your pets especially large breeds to grooming at a young age. The reason I stress large dog specifically so much is because a small breed dog is much much easier to contain. I will usually either tuck them under my arm or just hold them close to my body until they are calm. You can't do that with a large dog and even if you tried they often times will use their weight and force to get away. However it is still important to socialize your pets to grooming regardless of breed or size.

The biggest thing that I wanted to stress here is to please understand, as groomers this is not something that we take lightly. We do not want to refuse you or your pets service. We do not want to see your pets scared or terrified of any part of grooming. It is natural to be nervous sometimes in fact often times their intial nervousness comes from the car ride and once they realize where they are and whats happening they calm down. If we do refuse further service it is because it is not safe for us to continue. It is not because we dont have time. It is not because we don't have patience. The only time that time may be an issue is with a first time visit with a new client. If we schedule for a certain amount of time, especially in a one on one shop like mine, we unfortunately can not just stop everything and reschedule everyone else to accommodate with reactions like that. If that is the case I will often ask you to reschedule so that I can give both of us more time another day. Being a groomer is not just about cutting hair, washing a dog and trimming a few nails. Being a groomer is about understanding the animals you work with, understanding their mannerisms, their behaviors, their emotions. Its about being able to help someone elses pet understand the grooming process and understand that we are not going hurt them and that they will be okay. However, as your pet's owner we need you to help us help you and help your pets. To do that, all you need to do is introduce your pet as early as possible and work with them at home too. Brush them regularly to keep them used to it for us, play with their feet, touch their faces, get them used to being handled in every way possible. You can set your pet up for a long, happy and successful life just by socializing them to everything.

Lastly, please please please don't hate us when we can't help anymore or have to stop. I see it all too often in the grooming industry, as said in the video, it cause groomers to get stressed trying to please you as the owner. The result is burnout, losing patience, early retirement, and for some, regret of even chosing this career. Grooming business owners are struggling every day to hire help because no one wants to join this career anymore and those that do start often don't stay. We don't earn tons of money despite what it seems, in fact we spend more money on utilities, supplies and equipment than what we actually take home to pay our own bills but we don't do this for the money. We do this for you and for your pets because it is what we LOVE! We love to see your pets so excited when its time to go home, we love to see the looks on your faces as you see how beautiful and excited your fur kids are when you pick them up! We always want the best for your pet and that is it. We, especially me, will always put your pet's health and safety first no matter what. We will always be willing to help you understand, to educate you on your dogs behaviors and how to help them or correct them. We will always be willing to work with you but you have to be willing to work with us. We will always try to give you the result you want as long as it is possible. We will always treat you and your pet with the utmost respect, all we ask is that you please return that same respect for us. Let us love this at the end as much as we did when we started, and remember, we are human too! ❤️

So to end this insanely long post 😅 please understand that I will not stop. I will not stop putting your pet first, I will not stop educating my clients, I will not stop keeping my health and safety in mind, and most importantly, I will not stop loving what I do! Good night all!
