Children make up a big chunk of reported dog bite victims- nearly half! The vast majority of bites are avoidable, but only if you understand what effective prevention really consists of. So many parents are told to "supervise dogs and kids" but many families don't feel equipped to do that amidst the chaos of real life.

The secret to becoming an empowered parent? Education and planning. When you're working with good information and strategies for managing dog and child relationships that are both flexible and sustainable, it's entirely possible to create a lifestyle where dog bite prevention feels easy. As a Parent Educator, my favorite things to do are to provide guidance and support to parents so that together we can brainstorm solutions that meet the needs of everyone in the family, dogs included!

It's National Dog Bite Prevention Week! At Family Paws, we take educating families about dog and child safety so seriously that we do it all year long.

The good news is that the vast majority of dog bites to children are totally preventable, especially if you know what to avoid. Here are a few common contributing factors you might not be aware of!

It's not uncommon for dogs to adjust relatively well to living with an infant, but suddenly develop feels of anxiety or discomfort once baby is mobile. This is a normal and expected development and licensed parent educators like me are here to help guide and support your family through these milestones!

When babies start crawling, life changes for the dog too. 🐾

Crawling babies move unpredictably, grab fur, invade resting spaces, and don’t yet understand a dog’s body language. Even the most patient dogs can feel stressed or overwhelmed by this sudden change in their environment.

This stage is a critical time for parents to actively supervise. Always supervise whenever there is a dog or baby on the scene and create safe dog-only rest areas (which we call success stations)

It’s also important to advocate for your dog by preventing crawling babies from climbing on, grabbing, or cornering them!

Shredding is a perfectly normal dog behavior, and one that is often overlooked as a form of enrichment. You can use shredding on its own, or use it with treats or kibble as part of meal times. Providing sanctioned shredding outlets can be so helpful in reducing the unwanted destructive behaviors that crop up other places, often as a result of boredom or unmet needs.

With snow and ice keeping us all cooped up inside, it's so important to find other forms of stimulation to keep your dog happy and entertained.

Goodbyes are never easy, but this one hurts extra. It's no secret we've developed a major soft spot for old girls and Drea was no exception. She had the sweetest smile and the perfect wiggle that never left any doubt as to how happy she was to see you. As soon as she opened her eyes when we woke her from a nap she was reaching up to kiss our faces. She was a lovebug through and through and we adored her with our whole hearts. We will always remember her warm sleepy dog smell and her little hippo snorts. We will miss you always, sweet girl ❤️

We're back from our holiday break and I started my day with the first training session of 2026 🌟 Ziggy is such a cute and clever little guy! It's been so fun to teach him all about life as a family dog while supporting his parents through the challenges and joys that come with puppyhood. I love puppy clients 🥰
