Meet Tortellini, one incredibly resilient tortoise who recently underwent a life-changing procedure here at Animal Medical Center!
Tortellini came to us after his left front leg had become entangled in wire for several days. Unfortunately, the prolonged entanglement caused such severe damage that the limb was no longer viable and was progressing toward gangrene, a dangerous condition involving tissue death.
Dr. Gilsleider determined that amputation was necessary to prevent further complications and give Tortellini the best chance at recovery.
But here's where things get interesting! 🩺
Because tortoises rely on their limbs to support and elevate their heavy shells, losing a front leg presents some unique challenges. Dr. G came up with a creative temporary solution using something you might not expect!
He attached a wooden hoof block, typically used on cattle, to serve as a temporary stabilizer. This helps elevate Tortellini's body off the ground while he adjusts to life on three legs. You can actually see this clever adaptation in one of the photos!
❤️ And the encouraging news? Just one morning after surgery, Tortellini was already eating his breakfast!
Cases like Tortellini's remind us why exotic animal medicine requires creativity, adaptability, and an understanding of each species' unique anatomy.
They also serve as an important reminder to check animal enclosures and outdoor habitats for loose wire, fencing, and other potential entanglement hazards. Even a seemingly small hazard can lead to serious injuries.
