Brrrrr!! Cold weather like we are seeing this week is dangerous for everyone in your family. After all, temperatures like this can cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes. So while it's easy for us to know when we are too cold (Verbal Communication does wonders for that), do you know the signs to look for in your pet?

No dogs should be left outside in this weather, short or long coat, for fear of illness or injury. The same 10 minutes that can cause frostbite in humans can also cause frostbite in our favorite furry friends. But what are the signs for canine frostbite?

1️⃣ Blue Skin - Blue, or grey with a blue tint, skin is one of the first signs of frostbite in both pets and people. If your pup has long or very curly hair, take a moment to separate the hair and check areas of concern.
2️⃣ Cold to the touch - Frostbite causes the skin to remain cold long after being brought inside. Take a few moments after your pup has been outside to see if there are any areas that seem colder than they should be and areas that don't respond to your warm touch.
3️⃣ Swelling - This one is tricky as there is no clear way swelling shows up. There may be extremely noticeable swelling or very minor swelling in areas affected by frostbite.
4️⃣ Pain - Frostbite causes the skin to freeze, which is incredibly painful. If, after some time in the cold, your pet is yelping, whining, or becoming defensive to you touching the area and shows other signs, this may be a good indicator your pet is dealing with frostbite.
❄️Paws, ears, and tails are the most common areas for frostbite to occur in dogs.

But what do you do if you believe your pet has frostbite?
1️⃣ Get them inside and keep them inside!
2️⃣ Carefully dry them off. Then using towels or your own body, gently start warming them up.
3️⃣Call your vet! Keep a clear and concise list of your concerns and problems you have noticed in your pet to help make their jobs easier. Your vet and any other pet medical facility will be experiencing a large volume of calls during this time. The best thing you can do for you and your pet is to stay calm and relay the facts.

🚫Do NOT rub or apply direct heat to the area you believe to be affected with frostbite! Gentle warmth only!🚫

It seems impossible that we’re already here to greet the end of 2025! What a rollercoaster of a year it's been!

🎉 This season marks 3 amazing years of pampering pups here in Clare! From all of us at Paws-A-While, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your trust, support, and enthusiasm have helped us grow and make a positive impact in the lives of so many furry friends (and their owners!) across Central Michigan.

🎄 A Quick Holiday Reminder
The holiday rush is officially here, and the salon has been busy!
👉 We are fully booked through Christmas.
👉 We are currently scheduling mid-January appointments.
👉 Weather permitting, we will be open EVERY DAY in the lead up to Christmas!

As always, pet parents may request to be added to our cancellation list, though availability cannot be guaranteed -- especially for clients not on a regular maintenance schedule!

⚠️ Cancellation Policy Reminder
To protect time and resources for all our clients:
• Same-day cancellations or no-shows incur a $25 fee
• Cancellations made with 24+ hours’ notice incur no fee

📌 Please note: We provide reminders as a courtesy, but clients are responsible for remembering their appointments, regardless of reminder status. Forgotten appointments are considered no-shows and are subject to the same $25 fee.

We understand that emergencies happen! Please reach out anytime, and we’ll always do our best to help!

📣 New Schedule Starting in January

To continue providing top-tier service (and to support a healthier work-life balance for our team), our hours are changing:

🕘 New Hours:
Wednesday – Saturday
10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

🐾 Drop-Off Windows:
• 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
• 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
🥪 We will be unavailable and the shop will be closed to customers daily from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. for lunch.

Why the change?
• We anticipate more structured drop-off blocks = shorter appointment times + smoother scheduling
• It gives a true rest day for our team = more energy, creativity, and long-term sustainability
• Better capacity for private 1-on-1 grooming sessions
• Allows us to accommodate evening schedules for clients

We currently get the joy of seeing 50+ dogs each week for pampering with our small team, and we're committed to providing continued top-quality care into the new year for all of them!

We’re confident this change will help us continue delivering and improve the premium grooming experience your pets deserve!
