ht from our head trainer:
There are many goals to have while in a dog obedience class. But there are three we have you focus on the most in class.
1) Can I define the command, which it the question, I’m asking my dog to do?
2) Does my dog understand my definition?
3) Before I move on to a new lesson (a new command) have I allowed my dog to say to me, “Yes, I totally understand what you are asking of me – I’ve got this”! As trainers/pet parents, it is so vital we have a complete understanding of what we are asking of our canines. On the same level, it is with equal value, that we allow our canines to build the same understanding and have the opportunity to say, “I can do this—I completely understand.”

Spot on! Don’t be fooled by story telling. Ask. Ask those who live with the breed of choice and talk with breeders. Never assume.

As yet another movie with malinois is about to hit the theater, our beloved breed will again be in the public eye.

Malinois are a fantastic breed, they are busy, sweet, goofy, working dogs that are biddable and love their people. They need stimulation, they need boundaries, they need structure, they need and love daily training.

While this makes them an awesome partner for some, this doesn’t necessarily make them an easy dog for most. They need, want and thrive with a job. They get bored easily and will find an outlet for their energy if you don’t.

As you watch the movie and are contemplating wanting a malinois, remember the hours and hours, heck years, that have gone into training the *mutiple* animals used in the movie.

Still want one? Contact someone in your area and go meet dogs. Please do some research and make sure it’s a lifestyle you can deal with. Again I love them, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. There is a lot of work behind the scenes to have dogs be trained model citizens.

This video is awesome! If you love training you’ll enjoy this. Her conversation about Mary is the exact conversation I’ve had (and still do) with Echo.
When I learned how to look at our training situations like, questions the dog has, my world opened up. God! Why didn’t I think like this in the past; talk about eyes wide open. Now the goal is to build my skill in thinking this way and observe those behaviors faster.
My training with Trinity is so different then my training with Tess and Echo. I’m not a crossover trainer, I never trained as a compulsion trainer, I’ve always trained under the umbrella of Operant Conditioning so my training hasn’t changed a ton when it comes to theories but my skills have bloomed.
I love how her trainer Jay said, just use the whip a little bit. I’m one of those who believes no correction on a dog until they can recite back to you the definition of the skill/behavior you are asking them for. How can you ask them to correct something they don’t know?
In Mary’s case she knew the answer, she just needed a little push to commit. It was used gently for a short time. At the same time, she the rider, also learned “she” needed to make corrections to help fix the issue. That is so true in handling dogs. Both the dog and the human have responsibilities—the human has more since we are driving everything and have a complete frontal lobe and opposable thumb‘s. 😉
This video was enjoyable for me, at this point in my brain knowledge, to be on the same page understanding the conversation she was having with her horse. This is such a simple concept of thinking, why oh why did it take me 11 years out of my 18 yrs of being a trainer to really turn the voltage up on light bulb in my brain.
Funny how you can learn the same thing over and over again and sometimes it takes one person to word the same concept just slightly different for the💡to flicker on.

Hi all! I need HELP.

Looking for at least five people to help with CGC testing in Sandy on February 20th from 6:30 PM–7:30 PM, possibly to 9:00 PM. I need some bodies to help with creating a crowd for testing.

Also if you can help and you have a dog who needs a CGC test, anyone who helps will receive the test at a $5 discount—bring the test to $15.

If you are able to help please contact Amy Smith at... 971-645-0107 (phone - text) or
