Flooding Tank…

What to do with a super anxious and reactive dog? For many they’d be hiding away somewhere trying desperately to keep him under threshold so as not to “traumatize” him or traumatize the trainer. 😉

The truth is, Tank is highly trained already, so there’s no need to build any obedience work first. And of course many would say I have to take more time to build a relationship with him before we can successfully tackle his issues — but that’s just dog trainer fairytale nonsense… the training is where you build the relationship.

And when it comes to the concept of flooding, so many in the training world have bought what they’ve been fed — namely that it’s a traumatizing boogeyman that only the unsophisticated (and reckless) would attempt. More dog trainer nonsense. Flooding has huge benefits — and that’s not theory, that’s first-hand experience seeing its benefits over and over.

As soon as I saw Tank’s behavior I told my wife, “He needs a ton of flooding.”

And so we headed to Boulevard Park, where there was non-stop action with people walking, jogging, cycling, playing games, laughing, yelling etc — and plenty of dogs… all of which was precisely what I wanted Tank to see… over and over and over.

I call this burning out the anxiety circuit. Dogs, like people can only remain on high alert, or be in a highly anxious state for so long — eventually the mind and body acclimate to the overload and instead of seeing all the incoming stimuli as novel and worthy of an intense reaction, the animal adjusts their response out of necessity and utility… and you get something altogether different.

I’m already seeing improvements in responses. Most excellent.
