“How do I become a K-9 Handler?”

It’s a question many officers ask — and for good reason. The role of a K-9 handler goes beyond standard duty. It’s about forming a powerful bond built on trust, discipline, and instinct. It’s about leading with purpose and working in sync with a highly trained canine partner.

To help guide you on this path, we’ve developed a hands-on introductory course designed to teach the fundamentals of K-9 handling. Participants will engage in real-world scenarios that simulate the daily duties of a handler, including detection and tracking exercises.

This immersive training will cover:

•Building and channeling canine drive

•Understanding the role of a backup officer in K-9 operations

•Effective teamwork between handler and support officers during tracks and detection calls

Welcome to Family First K9 Training. We are a professional organization founded upon over 22 years of expertise in dog training. Dan Kissing has collaborated with canine units nationwide to develop elite K9 teams for various law enforcement agencies. Dan has participated in numerous competitions with his K9s, earning a multitude of awards. He is also an OPOTA certifier for HCSO. Through his long-standing professional relationship with Jason Stanze, Dan has refined his skills and talent as a trainer.

Throughout the years, Dan has been involved with the Haverkamp Foundation and a wide range of K9 demonstrations for various services, charities, and fundraisers. Family First K9 has been established to provide specialized training in behavior modification, detection, positive reinforcement, obedience, protection, apprehension, tracking, and service training.
