We met some others on the way out to check the Geriatrics. The Geriatrics are a group of 20-25 year old who decided to live on the rugged far corner of the ranch. The bay in the last photo is Mozzie, a 23 year old Thoroughbred.

It finally feels like summer on the plains. Grass is cautiously growing. The weather is lovely. The horses have resumed their summer herds (groups of 2-7) and summer movement patterns. It's a wonderful time of year.

Also, a big thank you to Philip Himanka for insight and brainstorming on hoof wear patterns and growth, movement, and many other ideas that are helping to fuel research and care of the horses.

The summer subherds have territories that remain consistent year to year. However, these territories change a little season by season. Some herds might love the valleys during the summer and the open fields in the fall. The grasses around the ranch seem to vary by location and by season, so maybe that is driving their seasonal behavior patterns.

Summer behaviors are different than winter behaviors. Herd composition is a notable component of this. In winter, they cluster into one large group. They still prefer to interact with their friends, but they are a large, cohesive group. In the summer, they split into small subherds that consist of 3-10 horses. The subherds rarely change year to year.

Wyoming spring has brought wind, dust, and drought.

This influences the horses' behavior and needs. The horses still prefer to go out to graze, but they need additional help in the form of hay. They often meander away for hours and then return to eat hay. They are alternating between 'summer behaviors' (grazing, sleeping in the fields, walking more) and 'winter behaviors' (eating and sleeping by the bales).

Most of our horses aren’t passing through anymore — they’re staying here.
And the longer they stay, the more we’re observing in their movement, behavior, and soundness.

Even something as simple as a hoof print.

A decade after putting forth a gutsy second-place finish in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack, Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes alumnus Trojan Nation has found his forever home on a sprawling 2,500-acre ranch outside Cheyenne, Wyoming at the Center for Racehorse Retraining.

The environment seems to be a critical piece of hoof care. This Thoroughbred had his shoes pulled and was simply turned out in our semi-feral herd. We let movement, terrain, a native diet, and a herd do the work while we quietly monitored. While a few in the semi-feral herd need some help with trims, this one did not.

Replicating the life of a wild horse has proven that, given the chance, most Thoroughbreds are more than hot-house flowers that must be continuously coddled with blankets, shoes, and leg wraps.

Rumor has it you can only get to the arena if you answer their riddles. I have failed three times and am now a permanent resident of the pasture.
