WHOOPS. First week of September got ahead of us!
Tulsa dates for September and October at Mobile Horse Doc in Mounds. Mark your calendars!!

Who is this?
Cervical vertebra!

What doesn't match?
The articular facets (where your cervical joints meet) are not the same size or shape. There are 4 surfaces total (the round parts at top and bottom of the photo), 2 facing up, and 2 facing down. For reference, photo is looking at the top of the bone.

Why aren't they matching?
More than likely, this horse had some chronic neck arthritis and mobility restrictions, and quite possibly a front limb lameness.

Tulsa Dates- August 27th & 28th at Mobile Horse Doc!!

DON'T DO THAT!?!
Ever wondered what an impinging dorsal spinous process (aka kissing spine) looks like? Here is an example from a lumbar spine. Along with intertransverse (IT) and lumbar facet joints for reference.
Impinging DSPs can cause a lot of discomfort and frustration for horses, their owners, and their veterinary team. They can cause varying levels of pain in the horse, and the horses often have different responses to the same treatments.
Integrative Veterinary Medicine can offer assistance to traditional Western therapies with additional pain relief options (acupuncture, Tui-na, laser therapy, and Chinese herbal medicine); along with rehabilitation exercises to help your horse strengthen its body to lessen the strain on the affected area.

Did you know the tips of your horse's ears can give you a clue about cervical vertebral restrictions?
The tips of the ears should stay even or close when your horse bends his neck like in the photo. Once you reach the shoulder and girth line, some rotation has to happen. If you see any rotation before that, there could be vertebral restrictions, and it's time to call your veterinarian!

Don't forget it's Tulsa time the 30th and 31st this week, and August 27th and 28th at Mobile Horse Doc!

Sometimes you need a cat for scale...
This kitty is standing next to a femur from an average sized horse.
Yes, horses really are THAT big. Despite their size, they can be quite sensitive to subtle changes in their body. Acupuncture, medical manipulation, and Tui-na massage can aid us in finding and treating those changes.

Bones are super cool when you sit back and think about everything they do to keep us all functional.
The equine lumbar spine typically has 6 vertebrae, but as you can see in this photo, sometimes they don't read the rules. The lumbar spine can be a source of lameness or discomfort, and benefits greatly from manipulation of restrictions.
