16 years ago, Susan Peirce found a starving filly. She had been abandoned and was colicking, suffering, and in a state of angony. After fighting throughout the night to save her, naming her “Gracie,” and after 36 hours, we called a vet and gave her the final gift…mercy.

Outraged and heartbroken, Susan lifted her eyes only to find 9 other horses in a state of unspeakable anguish and suffering. That was the defining moment and the beginning of Red Bucket 16 years ago.

Today, Red Bucket turns a very “sweet sixteen.” With profound gratitude for the hundreds of dedicated volunteers and thousands of generous donors, we celebrate thousands of lives saved and transformed…because of you! We also grieve the loss of Gracie, and all those equines lost to neglect, abuse, and starvation. Thank you to all who have been a part of our life-saving work and happy birthday, Red Bucket.

In 2009, Cooper was evicted from a local track when his owner was charged with cruelty and neglect. Suffering from a training related injury, Cooper was dumped at a dilapidated stable and left to starve prior to being sold to slaughter. After his rescue, Cooper transformed from panicked and evading human touch to grateful and trusting, with impeccable ground manners. We provided him with specialized care and an enriched life for nearly 16 years until his racing injuries claimed his health and well-being. This year, we had the solemn privilege of holding our dear boy as he passed peacefully...a loved and wanted horse.

Thank you for being a part of our lifesaving work over the last 16 years! We remain committed to saving and serving the starving, abused, sick, and forgotten in 2025 and beyond. Thanks to a generous matching gift, every dollar donated through January 4th will be matched—up to $100,000! We’ve raised $82,000 so far—Join us and make your year-end gift count!

Say “yes” ⏰ The urgent pleas inundated our phone lines. Although full to capacity, we will never turn our backs...a once beloved horse was languishing and in a desperate state of starvation. His owner died and the “caretaker” claimed to have been too “triggered” to feed him. Robert Brimer III (aka, Mr. B💕) was suffering the unspeakable anguish of neglect, starvation, and isolation. Without delay, we said “yes” and brought him home to the safety of Red Bucket Equine Rescue.

Rescue is an overused word…it is not an activity; it is a responsibility that requires a committed plan for the lifetime of the horse. At Red Bucket, we believe in and protect life. This has been a most difficult year, yet we remain resolute in saving and serving. Join us in saying “yes” to horses like Mr. B, and help us raise $16,000 this to launch our year-end campaign into a transformative 2025.

Our lifesaving work is only possible because of you!

Before becoming a princess, Charlotte was just a baby, thriving and blossoming under our nurturing care .

After a slip in the stock tank, Baby Charlotte decided swimming was for fish and a Mustang named Ranger—not for her! She graduated from Charm Farm, where she learned to be a good citizen and how to lead like a princess.

Baby Charlotte also learned the meaning of commitment. She felt safe, loved, and emboldened to express her feelings and opinions with sassy confidence. Stay tuned for more on Princess Charlotte’s journey! 👑💕

Elliot ended his long weekend the same way it began… A glorious role in the warm sand while gal pals, Nikki and Trese (not shown due to indifference) grazed under the Pepper Tree! We hope everyone had a safe long weekend!

Our HEARTS are shattered 💔 as we bid farewell to our precious Blades after 7️⃣ glorious years. Blades was a champion, a hero, a true athlete, and most importantly, our beloved precious friend. Years of prior abuse, neglect and ambivalence finally claimed him. We are profoundly grateful to have saved, served, and deeply loved this amazing horse. A memorial service will be held at the beginning of the year.

The broken trail that led Blades to Red Bucket Equine Rescue was anything but straight. An extraordinary athlete reserved at $290,000 in a two-year-old auction, and an admirable performance record of 48 starts and 10 wins. Even then, he was bounced around with the gusting speed of a tennis match, having been claimed 15 times. He kept performing, first at high-end tracks, later finishing in low-end claiming races.

Having survived a local fire, he arrived two years later in a makeshift topless rig, 200 pounds underweight, with multiple fractures in both front legs. The recent sweat marks left behind by a saddle told the unspeakable tale of being ridden despite his agony. He backed out of the trailer, struggling to walk, with his head held high...a true hero!

While Blades quickly regained his dignity, he remained physically compromised. Devoted to his quality of life, Blades spent his days grazing and socializing with 14 other geldings, and retired to the protection of a well-bedded stall in the evenings.

As is our custom, we gifted Blades with his own red bucket, and named him in honor of Steve and Lucia Blades, treasured donors and adopters.
