A year ago these crazy puppies were born and we, also crazy, kept three. Indie, RJ, and Bruin. Year one has been all about learning how to be a dog. They have a few short hunts under their belts, are used to loading up in the box, and wearing tracking collars. Now it’s time to get serious! Sink or swim, kids!

LA Copperhead’s Hoss (“Hoss Man”)
July 24, 2021 - April 10, 2026

We are devastated to announce the passing of our best boy, Hoss. He died suddenly on Friday morning while hunting, although his death was not hog related. Although we are not sure of the why, we are comforted knowing that Hoss passed instantly without suffering while doing what he loved.

Hoss was born at our home and he was chosen as our keeper almost instantly. He was a confident yet goofy puppy and so much fun to raise. He got along well with the other dogs and never lost his playful nature. He loved the girls and loved attention and pets.

As Hoss grew we realized that he was making a fine example of his breed, a handsome dog with great working drive. Not only was Hoss one of our best hog dogs, but he was an excellent trial dog. I will never forget the April 2024 NALC trial when I was very pregnant and sent him into the B-bay competition. Hoss laid down an amazing run and then called right out to me and let me clip the leash on him without fuss. I believe that he knew that I wouldn’t be able to chase him around the pen and he was looking out for me. Hoss came home with High Point Male in B-bay that weekend.

Although there will never be another dog like Hoss, we were so fortunate to have him for almost five years. We will never forget our Hoss Man.

A day late is better than never! I had my brother and his family in town from Southern Illinois to celebrate their first Christmas in Texas! They all wanted to go hog hunting while they were here as they had never been before.

Im happy to say it will certainly be a Christmas Eve to remember for them! They enjoyed riding in the truck through the fields watching the dogs work. As we were nearing the end of our hunt, the dogs struck out on a fresh track. I could tell by their excitement something was near, and shortly after we were jumping out of the truck and into the creek bed on a nice sow. Congrats Andrew on your first wild pig!

Merry Christmas from all of us at Copperhead Catahoulas!

We are considering placing one of our adult female Catahoulas in a pet home. She does not have much hunting or working drive, but she is an incredibly sweet and beautiful dog! We have wanted to bring her into the house as a house dog but unfortunately my senior male does not tolerate her. She wants nothing more than to be loved on, sweet as pie and obedient! We would only let her go to the perfect home- please DM with any questions and for more information. Please, serious inquiries only.

Just wanted to put it out there that we are not affiliated in any way to ‘Copperhead Kennels’ (previously Western Illinois Catahoulas) out of Bushnell, Illinois.

Our kennel page was created in early 2018 and we have been using our Copperhead name to represent our kennel since late 2017.

We take pride in breeding a versatile, high-drive working dog that can play with your (supervised) kids and settle down at home after appropriate mental and physical stimulation. We will never recommend this breed as a service dog.

We breed health-tested dogs that are at minimum two-years-old, breed infrequently, and breed for ourselves first and foremost. We hunt our dogs and attend working trials. Our dogs always receive appropriate preventative and prompt medical care from a licensed vet when needed.

We have almost 13 years of experience with this breed and still have so much to learn from both old-timers and newer enthusiasts alike!

We have four puppies that we have been hanging onto from our Roux and Blu litter to evaluate them as long as possible before sending them to new homes. Fortunately, and unfortunately, they are all great and picking our keepers has been incredibly difficult. That being said, we have one or two solid black females that may be looking for a home, if and only if we decide it’s a great fit.

I have had a ton of people message me about pups and I don’t want to reach out individually. If anyone is interested in more information, please message privately.

If we don’t find the perfect fit, it won’t break my heart to keep all four of these amazing dogs.
