TWO KITTENS ABANDONED, ONE KILLED: Recognize this truck? This morning at 7:04 a.m., the driver of this truck pulled into the Farmer's Market Convenient Store Gas Station, on State Route 50 outside of Chillicothe, parked by a gas pump, opened the door, and dropped two kittens onto the parking lot, leaving them behind. As the driver pulled away, one of the kittens was run over and killed. The other kitten was taken to the Ross County Humane Society, where it was then picked up by humane agents and brought back to our animal care and adoption center.

Mango and Nectarine have officially been here long enough that we feel comfortable saying they're not just passing through.

These two big boys arrived together nearly a month ago, and somehow nobody has come looking for approximately 200 pounds of dog. We still don't understand it.

Mango is 4 years old. Nectarine is 7. Both are friendly, both have done well with other dogs here, and both tested positive for Lyme disease when they arrived. They've completed treatment and have spent the last few weeks settling into shelter life. Well... mostly.

Mango took the whole "shelter stress" thing a little personally and decided chewing on himself was a reasonable coping mechanism. The good news is that he's healing nicely, but the better news would be getting him out of here before he decides to take up any new hobbies.

Both boys have a few lumps and bumps that will be addressed during their neuter appointments, but otherwise they're healthy, happy, and very ready for homes of their own.

As for breed? We still don't know. Lab mix? Maybe. Great Dane mix? Possibly. Small horse? We're not ruling anything out.

What we do know is that they're both large, lovable dogs who have spent nearly a month wondering why they keep getting overlooked.

If you've been thinking about adding a big dog to your family, we currently have enough dog available to make a very serious commitment to that goal.

Stop by and meet Mango and Nectarine. They're running out of patience with shelter life, and honestly, we don't blame them.

SUSPECTED ABANDONED KITTEN: This kitten was located beside an open box on Lick Run Road in Ross County on Wednesday by Ross County Deputy Dog Wardens and brought to the Ross County Humane Society.

Meet Beans, Taters, and Pickles.

These three have been living the good life in foster care, but they're back at the shelter now and officially looking for homes of their own.

We actually DNA tested this litter, and they are the Ross County trifecta of breeds: Pit bull, German shepherd and chow chow are the main contributors to their DNA.

At around 8 weeks old, these pups are already showing plenty of personality. They're confident, independent, and not afraid to let you know when they disagree with your plans. We expect them to be 50+ pounds when fully grown, so they're looking for families ready for all the fun that comes with raising a larger breed puppy.

If you're looking for a puppy, now is the perfect time to come meet them. Just be warned, if you stop by to see Beans, Taters, and Pickles, there's a pretty good chance you'll fall in love with at least one of them.

This post is a little different from our usual adoptable dog posts, but we're hoping our fellow shelters, rescues, humane societies, and animal control professionals will help us spread the word.

The Ross County Humane Society will be hosting a Chemical Capture Certification Course on June 26, 2026, in Chillicothe, Ohio, taught by the Animal Control & Care Academy.

There are currently only 10 spots remaining.

In Ohio, certification is required to legally utilize chemical capture equipment for the immobilization of dogs and other animals. This course provides the training and certification needed to safely and effectively use darting equipment in the field.

The cost is just $225 per person.

If you work in animal welfare, animal control, law enforcement, wildlife management, or any field where chemical capture may be necessary, this is an excellent opportunity to receive certification without extensive travel.

She has the ears of a fruit bat, the legs of a kangaroo, and the facial expression of someone who is actively looking for a reason to start an argument in the comments section.

Meet Gadget Hackwrench.

At around 7 months old and 35 pounds, Gadget is still very much a puppy, but nobody has told her face that. While other puppies are out there looking cute and innocent, Gadget sits around looking like she's about three comments away from typing, "Actually..." and starting a Facebook argument that lasts until Tuesday.

The staff listed her as a dog, but we're not completely convinced. The ears suggest fruit bat. The legs suggest kangaroo. The expression suggests she just read something online that she disagrees with.

Despite looking like she's perpetually judging everyone's life choices, Gadget is just a young pup looking for a home of her own. She's active, curious, and ready to leave shelter life behind in favor of a family that appreciates her unique look and oversized personality.

If you've been searching for a puppy that's equal parts adorable, ridiculous, and looks like she has very strong opinions about things she knows absolutely nothing about, Gadget Hackwrench might be your girl.

Coco Chanel.

Now, based on her name, you might assume this girl has spent her life lounging on designer dog beds, sipping filtered water from crystal bowls, and demanding only the finest treats. Unfortunately, that's not exactly the case.

In fact, Coco's previous idea of luxury involved being tied to an electrical pole. To be fair, maybe it had a nice view. We don't judge.

What we do know is that Coco is a friendly, social little lady who weighs in at around 20 pounds and is 1 year old. She has done well with dog introductions here at the shelter, showing loose, appropriate behavior and generally minding her manners.

Coco is available to meet and adopt today. If adopted, she will need to remain with us through tomorrow so she can have her spay surgery before heading home.

What Coco is looking for now is pretty simple: an indoor home, a comfy place to sleep, and people who think she belongs with the family instead of at the end of a chain. The only tethering she should be doing from here on out is a leash for bathroom breaks or for keeping her safe while posing for scenic photos.
