Being a versatile rider is an important skill, and it’s something a rider can only develop by “doing.”

In this specific case, we’re talking about the adaptability that comes with switching between different horses. Every horse has their own unique quirks, style, buttons, movement, sensitivities, and ways of communicating. What works perfectly for one horse may not work at all for another.

An adaptable, or versatile, rider has spent enough time on different horses that they can quickly feel out those differences and adjust their riding accordingly. They don’t expect every horse to respond the same way, and they don’t become frustrated when their usual approach doesn’t work. Instead, they pay attention, make adjustments, and figure out what that particular horse needs from them.

That kind of adaptability doesn’t come from riding the same horse over and over. It comes from riding different horses, experiencing different challenges, and learning how to communicate with each one.

🐴 Work for Lessons Opportunity 🐴

I am looking for a reliable, horse-loving individual who would like to gain more hands-on experience while becoming part of our lesson program team!

I’m currently looking for someone to assist with lesson preparation in the mornings (specifically Thursday mornings, though additional days may become available). In return, you will earn riding lesson credit based on the hours you contribute. Lesson time will be granted as hours accumulate.

Responsibilities include catching horses, feeding, grooming, saddling, lunging horses before lessons, and helping with other light barn tasks or farm projects as needed. This is not a riding role.

You don’t need years of experience for this role, but you should already be comfortable around horses and able to work independently after training. I have a few months to train the right person, so I’m looking for someone who already has good sense around large animals, a willingness to learn, and the ability to follow directions. While I won’t leave you by yourself for safety purposes, I’m looking for someone I can rely on who is willing to learn and become confident in the role. After training, I need someone who can take initiative and help things run smoothly without needing me involved in every step.

• Ages 18+
• Reliable and responsible
• Comfortable handling horses
• Willing to learn and follow directions
• Able to commit to a minimum of 2-4 hours per week through at least February 2027

Funny tidbit for your Wednesday—

I just saw a horse owner post about their horse swallowing a chick whole, and she was completely shocked by the horse’s behavior. It immediately made me think of this old video (linked below). This is an old video that you may or may not have seen circulating the internet over the years.

We’re all taught in grade school that horses are herbivores—which is absolutely true—but it doesn’t tell the whole story. While horses aren’t considered omnivores, they have been documented occasionally eating small animals, eggs, fish, or even chewing on bones. This uncommon behavior is thought to happen out of curiosity, accidental ingestion while grazing, or sometimes in an attempt to obtain extra nutrients such as minerals or protein. This behavior is called being an “opportunistic omnivore.” Horses are NOT considered opportunistic omnivores, although every once in a while we see them demonstrate that behavior! Deer are another animal that express the same behavior from time to time.

It’s definitely not normal table manners for a horse, but it’s also not unheard of!
