PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT PERSON: Sergeant Gallegos or on duty Sergeant

CRIME/INCIDENT: Case # 25-508

Fleeing Suspect

DATE OCCURRED: February 17, 2025
TIME OCCURRED: 17:17 P.M.
LOCATION: 259 S. Main St, Launderland
Suspect: Core Janic of Red Bluff
Victim: State of California

SUMMARY:

On February 17th, 2025, officers observed a male riding his bicycle southbound on South Main Street. The male was recognized from previous law enforcement contacts as Corey Janic, known to be on Post release Community Supervision (PRCS) out of Tehama County. Officers attempted to stop Corey on his bicycle.

Officers activated their overhead emergency lights and sirens, instructing Corey to stop. Corey looked back, yelled something at the officers, and continued pedaling away. Corey was informed over the loudspeaker to stop and that a canine unit was present. Despite this, Corey continued to flee.

As Corey rode his bicycle behind Tractor Supply and into the field west of the store, officers were forced to stop their patrol vehicle due to the difficult terrain and pursued Corey on foot. Corporal Lampron deployed his K9 partner, Max, and issued another canine warning announcement. Corey could see Max running with the officers. Corey continued north through the field for approximately 75 yards before raising one hand, signaling that he was giving up.

Based on Corey’s indication of surrender, Corporal Lampron called Max off the apprehension. However, Corey did not surrender and continued riding his bicycle towards 165 South Main Street, entering the Flying A trailer park. Corey was last seen by space 66. Several additional canine announcements were made outside the trailer, but Corey did not surrender.

Due to Corey’s flight from law enforcement and entry into someone else’s residence, officers checked the front door of the trailer. The door was found to be unlocked but barricaded from inside. Officers pushed the door open, and Corporal Lampron entered the residence with his K9 partner, Max. Max located Corey hiding behind the door and apprehended him.

This incident highlights the valuable role K9 units play in our city and county, aiding in the location and apprehension of criminals while ensuring officer safety.

Narcotics Arrest

On 1/30/2025 at about 0051 hours, Deputies on patrol in Del Norte County conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a motor vehicle violation in the Bertsch Tract area. Deputies contacted the driver of the vehicle, 53 year old Scott Barker and his passenger identified as 46 year old Brent Barker.
K-9 Zuko was deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle and alerted to the presence of narcotics within the vehicle.
During a search of the vehicle deputies located approximately 18.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine and multiple pieces of drug paraphernalia.
Scott Barker was found to have prior convictions for possession related charges and received an additional charge of HS 11395.

Message from Sheriff Scott: I am making sure to get as many of these arrest notifications out to the public as I can. I feel it is important that even though we are short staffed, our community knows we are out there keeping our County safe. I am proud of K-9 Zuko and his handler Deputy Brittain, along with assisting Deputies working to make these arrests. Deputies are not only answering emergency calls but making proactive arrests when they see suspicious activity.

Way to go K9 Dolly!

Early this morning, the California Highway Patrol was in pursuit of a motorcycle containing 2 occupants. After ditching the motorcycle on the Copeland Creek path, the rider and passenger fled on foot into A - Section of Rohnert Park. Rohnert Park DPS, Sonoma County Sheriff and Cotati PD units coordinated a perimeter and began searching for the subjects. K9 Dolly was requested to assist. Handler Officer Sullivan and K9 Dolly started a track from the motorcycle along the Copeland Creek path. Dolly led officers to a nearby apartment complex where a male subject matching the description of the motorcycle rider was observed crossing the street. The subject disregarded verbal commands from officers and began running away. After a short foot pursuit, the male subject was apprehended by officers from CHP and RPDPS. K9 Dolly trailed from the motorcycle to the subject detained and sat, confirming the subject as the rider of the motorcycle. The female passenger was located by CHP aircraft and detained by ground units shortly after.
