On April 16, 2025, Grizzly was born via c-section to his Mama Louisa. Grizzly was the thickest of his siblings. In the beginning, Grizzly earned the nickname “Meatball” because of his husky figure and the unique white spot on the back of his neck. When it was time to eat, Grizzly would posture looked like that of a grizzly bear walking on his hind legs, when he climbed on his mama. He looked like a lineman in the NFL. When Louisa was unable to produce enough milk to feed her puppies, Grizzly was a natural when it came to drinking from a bottle. As little as he was, he would grab the bottle from me and would try to finish it off.

Ironically, as Grizzly grew older, he began having difficulty holding any liquids or food down. Not too long after eating, Grizzly would regurgitate his bottle. At times it was so bad that he would lose some of the coloring in his mouth and gasp for air. Every day I’d pray that he wouldn’t aspirate and get pneumonia. From around 4-6 weeks old, it was a very scary time. Multiple ER and doctor visits gave little to no answers as to why Grizzly could not hold food down. The only glimmer of light was that he was able to still gain weight. When Grizzly was 6 weeks old, he underwent a fluoroscopy.

In dogs, fluoroscopy with barium is a real-time X-ray imaging technique used to evaluate the esophagus and swallowing function. Barium, a contrast agent, was administered to Grizzly, and the fluoroscope allowed his medical team to observe the movement through his esophagus and stomach as Grizzly swallowed. The test results showed that there was an issue with Grizzly’s esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter that goes into his stomach. With trial and error, it was determined that heavier food was the key to help Grizzly keep his food down. Stella and Chewy’s puppy patties were the only thing that he could keep down. The good news was that the patties quickly absorbed up water and expanded in his stomach. This meant that Grizzly could stay hydrated while he ate. This was a game changer. As Grizzly continued to grow, his condition improved, and he was out of danger. Many doubted that he would survive, but I just refused to believe that. They didn’t know him like I did. There was no way that I was going to give up on him.

Grizzly went on to make a full recovery and, like his mama, proved himself to be a survivor. I cannot adequately put into words just how special Grizzly is... he is a walking miracle.

When the time came to pick Grizzly’s forever family, well, he picked them himself. When a family came to meet two of the other puppies, I pointed out that Grizzly had already chosen them to be his forever family. While the other puppies ran around the yard, Grizzly followed the couple and never left their side. Grizzly quickly bonded with their dog Elaine and was quite smitten with her. He had almost a cheeky grin and gave every indication that this was his family. I had honestly struggled with if I was going to be able to part ways with Grizzly but once I saw his behavior I knew it was fate. It was apparent that I had already played my part in his journey, and it was time for him to go. With that, I would like to officially announce that Grizzly has found his forever home! He now lives way up in Wisconsin and his family absolutely adores him.

We love you Grizzly! You make sure to check in and tell us all about your adventures!

On April 16, 2025, Ponytail was born via c-section to her Mama Louisa. She was the only girl in the litter and that made her extra special. When Louisa was unable to produce enough milk to feed all of the puppies, Ponytail had the hardest time when it came to bottle feeding. She really just wanted to nurse from her mama. Because of that, I would make sure that Ponytail got first dibs on Louisa’s milk. Even if it wasn’t planned, Ponytail always found a way to break away from her littermates and find her mama. Those extra moments with Louisa seemed to help her thrive.

Ponytail’s name started off as a nickname, and it was just too perfect to change. She was the only puppy with a long straight tail, and it just seemed fitting. Ponytail was a bit more reserved than her brothers and chose to sit back and observe before acting. She always assessed any new situation before venturing out. This will serve her well as she gets older.

Knowing that Ponytail was a bit more sensitive than her brothers, I wanted to make sure that she went to a home that was not too overwhelming for her. I didn’t want the learning curve to be too extreme and for her to be frightened.

So many wonderful adoption applications came in for Ponytail but one in particular stood out. The family’s 2 beloved senior pups had passed away, and they were finally ready to welcome a new family member. After hearing stories about the two pups and the lengths that the whole family went to make their twilight years special, I knew that they were the family for Ponytail. With that, I would like to officially announce that Ponytail has found her forever home. Our baby girl has been adopted!

Ponytail’s new family is head over heels for her... you might say that it is a match made in heaven. We love you Ponytail!

On April 16, 2025, Badger was born via c-section to his Mama Louisa. From the day he was born, Badger stood out. He was a strong little puppy and a true survivor. When Louisa wasn’t producing enough milk and Badger needed to be bottle fed, he took to it like a champ. Badger’s eyes had yet to open, and when he smelled the formula, he would get so excited and start loudly sniffing. He would move his head around so fast that I had to hold it still so that he could find the bottle. I always knew that he had the best chance of survival.

When Badger was born, his tail was bent at a 45-degree angle. His misshapen tail, along with his tendency to always turn back around, earned him the nickname Boomerang. For a while it looked like Badger had a little nubbin for a tail but as the weeks went by it started to straighten. Now, it is just a little crooked.

Badger blossomed into a strong-willed puppy that was the leader of his siblings. With such a strong personality, I knew that Badger would do best in a home with confident, chilled out pups that could help teach him some manners. Luckily for Badger, there was a forever home waiting with 2 pups just like that!

Without further ado, I’d like to introduce you to Badger and his forever family! Badger has a new mom and dad that adores him, and two siblings that think he is pretty cool, too. Badger’s sister’s name is Mya and his brother is Milo. Both were adopted from Chicago Anti-Cruelty many years ago. We are so grateful to have such a loving family welcoming our sweet boy into their family. Thank you for choosing to adopt!

We love you Badger!

Louisa has been making great strides with her physical therapy. She has started to receive Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation to wake up and help strengthen the muscles in her legs. Seeing her physical therapist Lisa, and Officer Bob, continues to be the highlight of her week. In fact, she tries to break out the back door if she thinks that there is a chance that they are outside. Lisa and Bob have helped Louisa and I since the day I took her in. I could not have made it through the last 4 months without them. Lisa taught me how to express both Louisa’s bladder and bowel. I was scared out of my mind about how to take care of a paralyzed dog and Lisa talked me off the ledge many times. The services that L&B Pet PT provides for their clients are like none other. I am beyond grateful to have them in our lives.

Iris, Ziggy, Bentley, Hazel Grace & Eeyore all had vet appointments today. Hazel Grace couldn't figure out why everyone else tagged along and was a bit annoyed that she needed to share her favorite doctor. Hazel Grace had acupuncture and had to undergo some follow-up testing. Everyone else had vaccines and bloodwork. Eeyore's ears were bothering him so and a culture showed a yeast infection in his right ear. He also had a needle aspirate taken of a lump at the base of his tail and received an allergy shot. Little Iris has a bad knee and will one day need surgery. Her knee has been this way since she was a baby so she is used to it be a little wonky. When the time is right, she will have surgery.

It was a big day and everyone was ready for a nap. They were such good dogs.🐶

Thank you to Dr. Stecher and the staff at Precious Bond Animal Hospital for taking such good care of our therapy dogs. You made them all feel very special. 🩷
