The Veterinary Emergency Team remains in Central Texas, as search-and-rescue efforts continue. Due to rain and flooding over the weekend, the team enjoyed a rest day and welcomed a visit from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences Dean August.

With more than 50 canines in their care, the team remains committed to providing exemplary care for the canines as they navigate the challenging terrain, working tirelessly to find those who are still missing.

To help keep the hardworking canines in Kerr County at peak condition, the Veterinary Emergency Team has been treating the dogs who have signs of muscle soreness or injury with a medical laser used for physical therapy and rehabilitation while they are on rest days. The team also is treating paw and lower leg injuries that can result from the many miles and hours the dogs spend navigating over rocks and tree debris along the river bottom.

Due to the water and muddy environment, these dogs rely on traction and toe grip, so the team uses bandages on feet sparingly. The VET also helps train handlers on how to use light wraps and booties, change them in the field as needed, and clean and medicate the dogs’ feet at the end of each day.

By providing this medical care, the VET ensures that the approximately 50 working canines under their care can continue to cover 5 to 15 miles of intense, debris-covered terrain each day as they work tirelessly to locate those who are still missing.

Our hearts remain with everyone impacted by this tragedy. We are grateful for the dedication of those who have stepped up during this time of need and are proud to support those working relentlessly in response.
