Tonight is genuinely a lot for a dog. Between the constant doorbell and a front door that keeps opening onto strangers in costumes, even an easygoing dog can hit their limit by 8pm.

The simplest thing you can do is set them up in a quiet room away from the door with something good to chew on, and keep that door shut while you hand out candy so nobody slips out behind you. This time of year, the thing we worry about most is a dog bolting into the dark.

How’s yours holding up tonight? Let me know in the comments. ✨

I know it’s scary when your dog growls at you, but that growl is doing you a favor. It’s the polite version of “please stop,” and a dog taught not to growl still feels the same way. They just stop telling you.

If your dog is growling at people, other dogs, or when you get near their stuff, I can help. Link in bio to book a free call.

If your cat has picked the couch over the scratching post, the post is probably in the wrong spot. Cats are picky about where they scratch, and the corner of the spare room won’t cut it.

Save this for the next time you catch them mid-shred! And if your cat is still choosing violence, I train cats too.

First one, and most common one by far: "does my dog feel guilty when I come home to a mess?"

No. That look isn't guilt. It's a response to your tone. Dog's don't connect your scolding to something they did an hour ago. They just know you're upset, and they're doing what works to calm you down.

The mess happened. The look is about right now.

Drop your question below and I'll answer it in a future post

If your cat slowly blinks at you from across the room, that’s a compliment. Cats don’t hand out trust to just anyone, so if you’re getting a few of these, you’re doing something right.

Comment below which one your cat does the most! And yes, I train cats too.

Fall flowers are pretty, but a few that show up on walking trails or outside your home can be poisonous to them, so make sure you swipe through to see what they look like.

Before your dog gets zipped into a hot dog costume for Halloween, check how they actually feel about it.

A lot of dogs put up with costumes without enjoying them at all, and the signs are easy to miss when you're busy trying to get the perfect picture. If your dog freezes or won't walk once it's on, they're uncomfortable.

Do a few short test runs this week with treats so the costume isn't a surprise on Halloween night. Some dogs get used to it after a couple of tries. If yours still looks miserable, skip it.

A bandana still counts as dressing up!

Save this for when the costume comes out, and send it to the friend who already bought their dog three outfits.

If you've ever looked at your own dog after a bad moment and felt your stomach sink, I get it.

Tucker looked like a lost cause on paper. Bite history, escapes, a court involved. He is not a lost cause, and he never was. He is a smart dog who needed the right outlet, and someone to give him a real plan and enough time to make it work.

Not every dog is Tucker, and I'm not here to sell you a miracle.

What I can tell you is how many dogs people write off because they never stop to ask what's actually going on underneath the behavior.

If you're scared, or stuck, or wondering if you're in over your head, come talk to me before you call it hopeless.

Once your cat builds a positive association with the clippers, nail trims become much easier.

Use the 6 steps in this video to help your cat actually enjoy their nail trims!

1. Get them used to you touching their paws and pair it with a high-value treat. (Do this a few times a day.)

2. Gently press their paw pads to expose the nails, then give them a treat. (Do this a few times a day.)

3. Let them investigate the clippers and reward them for sniffing or checking them out.

4. Bring the clippers up to their paws, give them a treat, then stop. (Do this several times a day.)

5. Try clipping one nail and STOP. Reward them when they cooperate.

6. Work up to clipping a few at a time. NEVER clip them all at once until they're completely comfortable.

If your cat has a bad reaction at any point, go back to the last step they were comfortable with and don't rush moving forward. Always take it slow.

Save this for the next nail trim!

Every dog owner has stood in their kitchen saying "no, no, NO" while their dog does the exact thing they're being told not to do. It's one of the most frustrating parts of living with a dog, and it feels like they're doing it on purpose.

They're not. Your dog just doesn't have the information yet. "No" tells them to stop for a second. It never tells them what you'd rather they do, so the second your back is turned, they're right back at it.

The dogs who seem to "get it" aren't smarter or better behaved. Someone took the time to show them what they're supposed to do instead, and properly rewarded them for doing it. Any dog can learn this.

If there's a behavior you've been trying to "no" your way out of for months, let's talk. That's what a discovery call is for.
