As Chicago’s only open-admission, municipal animal shelter and control facility, CACC provides a centralized resource for animal-related services for Chicago residents, and promotes the humane stewardship o

f animals throughout the City. CACC accepts stray and owner-surrendered animals and also impounds dangerous animals and animals confiscated for various reasons, including abuse and neglect. ✨ Meet Oboe ✨

Five year old Oboe has been with us for 40 days and 40 nights, and we just can’t understand why. She’s pint sized perfection: smart, sweet, playful, and ready for a home.

Oboe came to us after her family couldn’t keep up with the costs of care. But don’t let her light dusting of grey fool you... she still has plenty of pep! She knows sit, paw (both paws), and takes treats politely. She loves a good game of fetch, especially with tennis balls, and will happily show off her skills.

This cutie has done well on leash tests with other dogs, has met children, and was incredibly gentle. Whether she’s chasing toys or just sitting by your side, Oboe is an easy going companion who’s full of love. 💕

🦌 Chicago Wildlife Wednesday: DEER in the neighborhood

It’s not unusual to spot a deer wandering into the city... especially younger deer dispersing in the fall. While they may look out of place on our streets, the best thing you can do is:

✅ Give them space. Keep your distance and let them move on their own.
✅ Never feed deer. Feeding can make them return, concentrate in one spot, and create bigger safety issues.
✅ Keep pets leashed. Cross the street or change direction if needed.
✅ Drive with care. Deer crossings can happen quickly / especially near dusk and dawn. If one crosses, more may follow.
✅ Call for help only if needed. If a deer is injured, trapped, or causing a dangerous situation (like stuck in a fence), then report it. Otherwise, observation from afar is best.

By giving deer the space they need, we keep both wildlife and people safe in our city... admire, don’t approach, and . 💚

Just like his veggie namesake... mild, sweet, and versatile... Kohlrabi is a big, lovable goofball who’s ready to bring endless laughs and fun into your life.

This boy lives for fun:

Coco (a 7-year-old dilute tortie female) and Mufasa (a 3-year-old tabby boy) are a bonded pair who came to us late last month after a housing crisis forced their family to surrender them.

Coco is the nurturing one... she’s been taking on a motherly role, always reassuring Mufasa. And Mufasa? He’s the laidback nap king, just dreaming of being back in a cozy home instead of a shelter. Together, they make the sweetest duo.

We’d love to see these two stay together forever and because they’re a bonded pair, their adoption fee is just $65 total. 🐾

🌟 TUESDAY SPOTLIGHT: A Special Plea for Lorna 🌟

Lorna has been with us for 54 days and we can’t believe this sweet, silly girl is still waiting 💔.

🐾 She’s a Cane Corso mix, about 4 years old, and truly the definition of a gentle giant.
🐾 She’s had great leash tests with other dogs.
🐾 Her favorite trick? Paw! 🤝 And she LOVES showing it off.
🐾 She’s bouncy, playful, and all smiles... even after almost two months in the shelter.
🐾 She adores toys, belly rubs, and being loved on.

Lorna is our magical baby girl ✨. It’s heartbreaking she hasn’t found her family yet, because she has SO much love to give. Animals like Lorna, who’ve been here over 30 days, always have their adoption fees WAIVED.

Even though Saturday’s storms 🌧️ canceled a few citywide events, we were safely able to push through with our "From Chicago, With Love" adoption event and what a day it was!

❤️ We’re ecstatic to share that 37 animals found matches! Some lucky pets got to leave that very same day, while others will be heading out once their vetting or meet & greets are completed. ❤️

🙏 Thank you to all the amazing volunteers who helped with matchmaking, and a huge shoutout to Marco's Pizza (2537 Wabash Avenue) for donating pizzas to keep our teams fueled. Your generosity kept everyone going strong all day long and we’re so grateful. 🍕

🐶🐱 In the meantime, the work continues:

✨ Adoption fees are always waived for any of our long-term pets (30+ days in the shelter).
✨ For bonded cats here under 30 days, you only pay one adoption fee, because best friends deserve to stay together.

Join us today, 12–6 p.m., as Chicago Animal Care and Control wraps up Adopt Local: Chicago Shelter Pet Week, proclaimed by City Council, with what we hope is one of our biggest adoption events top date. We’ll have more staff and volunteers on site to help you find the perfect match.

Chicago health officials recently reported a death from leptospirosis, a rare bacterial disease that can affect both people and pets.

From the animal care side, it’s a good reminder to check your pet’s vaccination records.

🐾 Dogs can be protected with a leptospirosis vaccine. If your pup is due for a booster, now’s a good time to schedule it with your vet.

🐾 Cats are less commonly affected and don’t have a routine vaccine for leptospirosis.

Keeping your pets up to date on vaccines is one of the best ways to keep them, and you, safe.

At 12 p.m. sharp our doors open for From Chicago, With Love 💌, what we hope is Chicago Animal Care and Control’s biggest adoption event of the year!

We’ll have extra support on hand to help you find your perfect match, and everyone's adoption fee is waived. Our staff, our volunteers, and every pet here are crossing their paws that you’ll come down to support local adoption and give these amazing animals the homes they deserve. 🐶🐱

🚨 Please do not bring your pets to the shelter, meet and greets between dogs are scheduled after you have applied in person.

Even though adoption fees are waived, our standard adoption process remains in place to ensure every pet is matched with the right home.
