This morning, my dear dog friend Finn helped join a panel discussion via virtual platform. I also had the joy to spend the night for a sleepover with snuggle time while his family travels. He’s such a honey.

The best part was seeing one of his favorite family members .yablon also on the same panel discussion, but attending this conference in-person.

We had a good giggle!

Mentorship update from Team Trouble!

A wonderful email with photo update arrived this morning from a current client team, that features one of my tips in action.

Their adorable five month old puppy, Sydney, uses her mouth to explore all the things while on slow hikes. This includes her leash, and pant clothing material.

Rather than suppress this behavior, we look at the function (purpose), and go through our checklist.

✅ Is she hungry? She’s growing quickly, and may need a caloric increase.
✅ Monitor her weight with the help of their awesome veterinary team
✅ She’s currently teething, and those adult pearly whites are pushing through… ouch!
✅ Does she need to eliminate?
✅ Assess the cues the evoke mouthing behavior, and consequences that reinforce it.
✅ Bring food on walks and offer treats contingent on all the wonderful behavior she offers that we’d like to increase in frequency.
✅ Bring more approved safe toys to chew on.
✅ Is she tired and needs to rest? Or, did she just wake up, and full of fresh energy?
✅ Is she thirsty?

⚽️ ✅ And stuff a small ball inside a clean tube sock that is easy for her to place mouth on. I use this tip with my own dogs when they are mouthy puppies. Even as we walk through our home. Plus, the long length of the sock sets the environmental condition for height access that’s easy to hang near the leash, so we’re not bending over, potentially tripping.

🐾✅ Now Sydney has access to this novel toy on walks, and enjoys rest time with it while outside, too.

This update doesn’t address all the useful tips available we as professionals can provide. But it’s definitely one of my favorites.

✅ Always remember to supervise dogs with their toys to ensure safety.

A mentorship moment update with Team Cayuga.

Many thanks to friend and talented colleague .yablon for their generous referral my way. Samantha joined my Karen Pryor Academy Husbandry At Home live course earlier this year as an Engage guest while they jumpstarted an excellent foundation with Kiki’s expertise.

Team Cayuga has multiple veterinary and grooming goals. I feel fortunate to be invited into their care plans to offer additional tips.

Per their permission, I grabbed a video screenshot of a recent update, that includes gentle brushing to help loosen and remove smalls knots in his coat located behind the ears.

Cayuga was all in, while relaxed on the elevated couch location contingent on small tactile approximations.

If you look closely, you’ll see a small amount of a fur that was gently combed out, placed on the cushion too.

Samantha is a phenomenal animal caregiver and professional. Lucky me to learn with them along with their excellent questions!

Team Smalls earned their AKC Novice Trick Dog title today!

They began their learning journey with incredible help from when they lived in Arizona. They moved to Chicago a few months ago, and I’m honored to join their team in thanks to Dianne’s generous referral.

Dr. Rivera is a talented veterinarian, and brings Smalls to work so they enjoy more time together. We wrapped up their TKN testing with fun tricks in the exam room, featuring one of the numerous benefits of these activities integrated into wellness exams. See second photo of the adorable clownfish middle trick, too.

In my professional adventures, I strive to collect meaningful memorabilia. Special moments to reflect on with joy.

This past weekend, I had the honor to teach a two-day virtual seminar for hosts and guests in Brazil. It was another extraordinary opportunity to learn with talented colleagues, and their brilliant pups. We had eight phenomenal working dog teams whose live demonstrations inspired us all, with guests observing and contributing with thoughtful questions from across the globe.

Many thanks to generous hosts .comportamentopet .af & translator extraordinaire for their kindness, attention to detail, and enthusiasm. To the canine companions and their family members from Brazil—wow! You each knocked it out of the ballpark. Compassionate care and training featured by each team.

Day 1 (July 19) was particularly meaningful, for that would’ve been sweet Santino’s 15th birthday. He joined us via videos, and his photo is on this certificate that I requested.

There is an immense amount a talent in our animal care community. And everyday I feel lucky to be surrounded by humans and animals that enrich my life in numerous ways.

Happy Birthday, Santino. I’m going to frame this photo of us to commemorate celebrating you.
