The rain may have moved out, but before you or your pets head to the river, creek, or Bay for a swim, there’s something important to keep in mind: runoff.
When heavy rain falls, water flows across roads, farms, lawns, parking lots, and other surfaces, carrying bacteria, fertilizers, pet waste, chemicals, and other pollutants into our local waterways. This is called stormwater runoff, and it can temporarily make the water unsafe for both people and pets.
Swimming in water with high bacteria levels can lead to skin irritation, gastrointestinal illness, ear infections, and other health concerns. Pets are especially at risk because they often drink the water while swimming.
Before heading out, check the latest water quality results from ShoreRivers, our local water monitoring organization. They provide free weekly water quality testing throughout the region so you can make informed decisions about where and when to swim.
A quick check before you dive in can help keep your entire family—two-legged and four-legged—safe this summer.
