Our beautiful "Baton Rouge" - King vulture (Sarcoramphus papa). King vultures are native to Mexico and south to Argentina. They have an extremely powerful beak, built to rip open tough-skinned carcasses. Because of this, they are often first on the scene of a newly found carcass while weaker-beaked vultures join in after. Baton has a five & a half foot wingspan and is actually a sweet little bird - when she feels like it.

Our birds would like to thank Bob & Connie at Murphy Carpet in High Ridge for their generous donation of carpet scraps to the sanctuary.
We use carpet to line travel crates and evening perching stalls (as Minerva demonstrates) to protect the bird's feet from pressure sores, so it's a very important commodity to us!

World Bird Sanctuary is currently closed due to flooding on the main road. Please do not attempt to come in. As long as the intersection of Interstate 44 and 141 is closed, we too will be closed, which may extend through the weekend.
Never fear - our animals are safe and sound and will continue to be well cared for.
