With spring only a few weeks away (🙌), it’s not too early to start thinking about a deworming plan for your equine companions.

If deworming is something you’ve been doing the same way for as long as you can remember, this year we encourage you to break tradition and work with your veterinarian instead. Thanks to tools like the f***l egg count, your horse doctor can help you devise a treatment tailored to the needs of your equine friend plus monitor the efficacy of the dewormer used last.

And before you dismiss this notion because you’ve been “doing it for years,” you should know that the old-school approach to deworming is quickly becoming outdated—not only a waste of money but it also builds drug resistance in the parasitic fauna of equines, which means we are running out of drugs that can effectively help us control parasite infections.

For the month of March, we will be offering a free laser treatment in conjunction with any chiropractic appointment scheduled during the month. The laser treatment must be done at the same appointment as the chiropractic treatment and is limited to a single anatomical region that the veterinarian feels will be most therapeutic to your horse. There is no monetary value associated with the laser treatment.

This National Dental Health Month, we want to acknowledge the importance of annual oral examinations and floats for every horse. This procedure involves filing down sharp enamel points and correcting misalignments that develop over time. When it comes to floating, we prefer power floating over hand floating for several reasons:
• Diamond head burrs offer precise filing and are more gentle on soft tissue compared to carbide hand floats.
• Power floating is not only faster but also less fatiguing for the horse, often making it a less stressful experience than hand floating.
• The accuracy of power floating enables precise correction of dental abnormalities, such as waves, steps, and hooks.
• The precision it offers reduces the risk of accidental trauma to the gums and cheeks, and minimizes the likelihood of excessive tooth removal.

The use of sedation and a speculum is vital for a thorough oral exam, effective identification and correction of abnormalities, and stress reduction for the horse.

Winter is wintering!! Friendly reminder to make sure your horses have access to fresh, clean, and ✨unfrozen✨ water at all times! For a normal sized horse, a tablespoon of plain salt can be added (gradually) to feed to encourage more water consumption.

Wellness Program Price Extension!
Our Core Wellness Program was designed to include medical services that horses in our area need on a yearly basis. Our Performance Horse Wellness Program begins with the Core program and adds services that would benefit horses in a regular work/show schedule. The cost of either plan is a 10-15% savings when compared to the cost of the included services purchased separately.

Did you know that if your horse is enrolled in one of the colic reimbursement programs (Colicare by Smartpak, Colic Coverage by Platinum, etc), they require an annual physical examination, including an oral examination, performed by a licensed veterinarian? Some programs also require an annual f***l egg count.
