Happy Wednesday, friends!!!! 🎉🐾

We owe you a BIG apology… we’ve been a little behind on sharing all of your absolutely ADORABLE pets! So today, we’re playing catch-up with some very special faces. 💕

Meet Kairo!!!
This handsome guy was recently adopted, and his dad brought him in to get established with us. We love seeing new pets start off on the right paw! Having a regular veterinarian is so important, so when your baby needs us, we’re already here and ready to help. 🐶✨

Meet Lucy Rina!!!
We just LOVE this sweet girl! She is such a good girl, and she actually enjoys coming to see us at the clinic. How lucky are we?! 💗

Meet Blue!!!
Blue’s mom still remembers when Dr. Turner said at their very first visit that Blue and his mom were the perfect match. Two years later… they’re still the perfect match. 🥹💙

Meet Leo!!!
This perfect little angel came in for his annual check-up, and as always, he was so well behaved. What a superstar! 🌟

We love getting to care for your pets and share their sweet faces with everyone! 🐾💛

We all want to be like Wesley… because honestly, who doesn’t love a good power nap?! 😴🐾

Our team has been working hard this year, and Wesley clearly understood the assignment. He decided to sneak in a little snooze while waiting for his appointment. 10/10 nap skills. ⭐

Wesley came in to establish care with us, and during his visit we noticed he had a very itchy ear. After taking a closer look, we found the culprit… ear mites! 🦠👂

Ear mites can make pets super uncomfortable and cause lots of scratching, head shaking, and irritated ears. The good news? Once we found them, we were able to treat Wesley’s ear and help him start feeling better!

So here’s your reminder: if your pet is scratching at their ears, shaking their head, or acting uncomfortable, don’t just “sleep on it” like Wesley. Give us a call so we can take a peek! 🐶💛

HAPPY MONDAY!!!!!

Stella is not as EXCITED as we are to see your pets this week!!!

Stella and Millie are so happy they are spayed now!!!

No more heat cycles or pyometras to worry about!!!

What is a heat cycle???

A heat cycle, also called an estrous cycle, is the normal reproductive cycle of an intact female dog. It is the time when her body prepares for breeding and pregnancy. What many owners call “being in heat” usually refers to the proestrus and estrus stages. Dogs have four cycle stages: proestrus, estrus, diestrus, and anestrus.

Most dogs have their first heat sometime around puberty, often between about 6–15 months of age, though small breeds may start earlier and large breeds may start later. Many dogs cycle about twice a year, but timing varies by individual and breed.

During a heat cycle, owners may notice:

Swollen v***a
Bloody or pink discharge
More licking of the area
Increased urination or marking
Behavior changes, such as clinginess, restlessness, or flirting
Male dogs showing strong interest

The heat period often lasts about 2–4 weeks. Early in the cycle, the female may attract males but not allow breeding. Later, during estrus, she may become fertile and receptive to mating. Pregnancy can occur if she has contact with an intact male during this time.

Call your veterinarian if the dog seems very painful, lethargic, refuses food, has a foul-smelling discharge, excessive bleeding, vomiting, or signs that continue longer than expected. Also call if she is not spayed and develops discharge or illness weeks after heat, because uterine infection can be serious.

Spaying is the most reliable way to prevent heat cycles and unwanted pregnancy.

Happy Friday! 🐾

We had the pleasure of meeting two adorable new friends last week: Jetty and Yuna!

These sweet babies came in for their vaccines and heartworm prevention. We also talked through the best timing for their spays, what to expect with their puppy vaccine schedule, and the importance of puppy classes to help them build confidence and become well-socialized.

Welcome, Jetty and Yuna! 💕🐶

Did you know male dogs can develop prostate problems too?

Prostatitis is inflammation or infection of the prostate gland, and it is most commonly seen in intact male dogs. It can be painful and may cause symptoms such as difficulty urinating, straining to defecate, blood in the urine, fever, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, or recurring urinary tract infections.

Neutering can greatly reduce the risk of many hormone-related prostate issues in male dogs, including benign prostatic enlargement, which can make dogs more prone to infection and discomfort. While neutering does not prevent every possible prostate condition, it is an important part of preventive care for many male dogs.

If your dog is intact, talk with our team about the best timing for neutering and what is right for his age, breed, lifestyle, and health history. And if you notice urinary changes, straining, blood, pain, or sudden lethargy, please schedule a veterinary exam with our team right away.

Prevention and early treatment can make a big difference. 🐾

Meet Loki, he was referred to us and we were able to schedule his neuter the very next day!

We are CLOSED today for a Staff Building Day! 🐾

Last Friday, the Grant Veterinary Care team held a Rescue Appreciation Day, and we are so proud of what this incredible team accomplished.

Marcie reached out to our distributors and pharmaceutical partners to see what they could donate to support this wonderful cause, while Hayley connected with our rescue groups to find out how we could help.

Together, we were able to spay and neuter 50 dogs and cats in one day! Our team worked hard until 5:00 PM, and while it was a long day, it was also an incredibly rewarding and fun one.

A huge thank you to IDEXX, Merck, Zoetis, Virbac, Midwest Veterinary Supply, and Penn Veterinary Supply for donating surgical supplies, vaccines, heartworm and triple tests, heartworm prevention, and flea prevention. These wonderful reps have been so supportive of the work we do, and we could not be prouder to partner with them.

Thank you as well to Portsmouth Humane Society, Pasquotank County Animal Services, Ruff Road Pet Rescue, Clever Cats Rescue, Compassion for Canines, Garfield’s Cat Rescue, and Lil Roar Cat Rescue for bringing us pets who needed to be spayed and neutered.

Most importantly, thank you to the amazing people in the shelter and rescue world who dedicate countless minutes, hours, and days to saving as many pets as possible. You give these animals a better life and make incredibly tough, heartbreaking decisions every day.

We are honored to support you and grateful for the work you do. ❤️

✨ Staff Highlight: Alyssa ✨

Alyssa has been an LVT since 2016 and brings experience in general practice, emergency medicine, and neurology to our team. Her favorite patients are tiny old crunchies and goofy pitties. 🐾

Outside of work, Alyssa enjoys spending time with her wife, who she married in March 2023. Together, they share a lively blended family that includes dogs: big and small, a few kitties, a bearded dragon, and even a tarantula!

When she’s not caring for patients, you can find Alyssa attending concerts, exploring breweries, hiking, practicing yoga, or capturing moments through photography. She is also a registered yoga teacher and loves curling up with a good book by the fireplace during a thunderstorm.

While she loves summertime, fall is her favorite season. 🍂 Fun fact: Alyssa also has a small obsession with makeup and shoes!

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It is a time to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of those who protected the freedoms we cherish.

May we never forget their service, their families, and the true meaning of this day.

Please enjoy these adorable pictures of Cleo. She was saved from a puppy store and now will be living her best life with her WONDERFUL new family and big sister, Athena.

We will be open tomorrow at 7 am!

We made it through another week... woohoo! 🎉

Say hello to our spay and neuter superstars from last Friday!

And meet Ivy, Maple, Pluto, Wybie, and Coco — these sweet kitties are all officially spayed and neutered!

🌸 PUBLIC SERVICE BLOOM-NOUNCEMENT! 🌸

Just a heads up that we will be CLOSED on May 25th for the holiday and CLOSED on May 27th for a staff team-building day!

Because of this, replies to emails, texts, and phone calls may take a little longer than usual this week. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding!

In the meantime, please enjoy this beautiful flower that bloomed in Dr. Turner’s garden. Nature really said, “Take a moment and smell the flowers.” 🌼✨
