Is Your Pet Ready for the Fourth of July?

While fireworks are a fun tradition for many families, they can be a frightening experience for our pets.

Did you know that the days surrounding July 4th are consistently some of the busiest days of the year for animal shelters? Animal shelters and animal control agencies report a 30–60% increase in lost pets between July 4th and July 6th, and July 5th is often one of the busiest days of the year for stray pet intakes. Many pets panic when they hear fireworks and may escape through doors, fences, or even windows in an attempt to flee the noise.

If your pet has a history of:
🐾 Fireworks anxiety
🐾 Thunderstorm anxiety
🐾 Pacing, trembling, or hiding
🐾 Excessive barking or vocalizing
🐾 Attempts to escape during loud noises

Now is the perfect time to talk about options to help keep them comfortable. Waiting until the week of July 4th may limit medication availability.

A few additional tips:
βœ… Make sure your pet's microchip information is current.
βœ… Check that ID tags are legible and attached securely.
βœ… Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays.
βœ… Create a safe, quiet space with familiar bedding, toys, and background noise.
βœ… Take dogs out for potty breaks before fireworks begin for the evening.

If your pet is already prescribed medication for noise anxiety, don't forget to request refills early!
