COMMUNITY MESSAGE
We want to share an important update with our Coffeyville community.
The City is working closely with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Montgomery County Health Department following a recent incident where a skunk within city limits tested positive for rabies.
This situation was handled using established safety protocols, and at this time, there is no broader public health risk. We’re sharing this as a proactive step to keep our community informed and supported.
Rabies does exist in Kansas wildlife, most commonly in animals like skunks and bats, and situations like this serve as a good reminder of how we can all help protect our families and pets.
Here are a few simple ways to stay safe:
✔️ Keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations
✔️ Avoid contact with wild or stray animals
✔️ Watch for unusual animal behavior (such as wildlife active during the day)
✔️ Report concerns so they can be addressed quickly
If a person or pet is bitten or scratched:
➡️ Wash the area thoroughly
➡️ Seek medical or veterinary care right away
We know updates like this can feel concerning, but staying informed and taking simple precautions goes a long way in keeping our community safe.
If you have questions or need to report a concern:
• Neighborhood preservation at 620-252-6119
• Police-After Hours (5pm-8am) 620-252-6160

💙 We’re here to keep you informed, prepared, and supported.
