I love this and definitely don’t talk about this enough!
⭐️”Rule of Thumb - Lean meats are more nutrient dense.”⭐️
At Cherry Valley Holistics this is very important to us and we considered this very heavily in our recipe formulation. The vet nutritionists and industry experts we worked with also considered this of significant importance.
⭐️As a result, at CVH we not only use USDA inspected, human grade meat, but we also use ONLY lean cuts of meat - 90% lean and higher! And yes, this includes our beef cuts also!⭐️

The leaner the meat, the higher the 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆—but choosing the right balance depends on your dog’s needs!
🔹 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 (easy keepers): Lean meats allow for a 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 while keeping calories lower and nutrients high.
🔹 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: Higher-fat meats (if tolerated) help pack in more calories 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲—important for dogs that struggle to eat large portions.
🔹 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗱𝘀: Even if using primarily fattier meats, lean cuts may also still be needed to 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲.
📌 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Lean meats tend to be 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲, so if you’re comparing raw, unlabelled commercial foods, remember that 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿—nutrient density and meat quality matter!
🚩 𝗕𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁: Recipes that simply list “𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗳” without specifying fat percentage can lead to major imbalances over time.
