We saw an older (> 10 years) dog this week with a mass in her mammary gland. She is not spayed- still has her ovaries and uterus. Before discussing surgery or removal, we took chest X-rays to scan for spread. There are several masses in her lungs suggestive of metastatic cancer.

During puppy and kitten visits we discuss spaying or castrating. We ask if the owner plans to breed. Estrogen from the ovaries predisposes dogs and cats to breast cancer. An intact uterus predisposes to pyometra (infection in the uterus). Other cancers of concern include ovarian and uterine cancer. Testosterone from intact testicles predisposes dogs to testicular and prostate cancer as well as perianal adenomas and adenocarcinomas.

This week’s case is a very sad case. The pet owner has very few options with the best one being quality of life, not quantity.

Spay/castrate your pet young. If you’re breeding, have a veterinarian consult on age of breeding and other breed specific recommendations. Spay/castrate as soon as you’ve stopped breeding to reduce the risks of cancer and/or infection.

The risk level will never be zero but by spaying or castrating you can minimize the risk.

Holiday Hours 🇺🇸

Our office will be closed Friday, July 3rd in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. We will reopen for normal business on Monday at 8:30 AM.

Please note that Dr. Tapp is attending a conference this week. However, our office remains open for vet assistant visits and medication refills throughout the week.
