Love is in the air, and deer are on the move! 🦌💕
It’s that time of year when deer are feeling extra social. Drivers should stay alert for deer crossing roadways, particularly at dawn and dusk. During deer mating season (aka the “rut”), from late October through December, more deer are on the go and there’s a higher chance of collisions with vehicles.
🚘 Stay safe and alert:
• Keep your eyes on the road and scan the shoulders; deer may dash out from wooded areas
• If you see one, expect more! Deer rarely travel solo
• Always wear your seatbelt and stick to the speed limit to give yourself time to react
• If a collision seems unavoidable, brake firmly and stay in your lane
💡 Did you know? A new FREE wildlife salvage permit allows the public to collect certain wildlife, including deer, killed in vehicle collisions. This helps reduce waste and supports wildlife data collection. Get a permit within 24 hours of collection at www.dem.ri.gov/wildlife-salvage-permit or by calling 401-789-0281.
