This week marks Animal Rights Awareness Week, a meaningful time to reflect on our responsibility to protect and respect the incredible creatures we share this planet with. While this dedicated week shines a spotlight on animal welfare issues, the truth is that our commitment to advocating for animals should extend far beyond this week. Every week presents opportunities to make compassionate choices, whether it’s supporting ethical businesses, volunteering at local shelters, eating plant based, or simply treating the animals in our communities with kindness and respect. Animals deserve our protection not just during awareness campaigns, but in our daily decisions and actions throughout the year. By carrying the spirit of Animal Rights Awareness Week into every week, we can work toward a world where all creatures are valued, protected, and allowed to live with dignity and freedom from harm.

Today we celebrate Sanctuary Caregiver Day, but honestly, we celebrate each of you every single day.

Thank you to the amazing caregivers everywhere but to our amazing Barn animal care staff, facility team, and dedicated interns – you are the heart and soul of everything we do here. Every morning, you show up with compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to our 140+ residents who call this place home.

Whether you’re mucking stalls before sunrise, preparing specialized diets, administering medications, maintaining safe spaces, or simply offering a gentle touch to a resident who needs comfort – your work makes all the difference. You see each resident as an individual with their own story, personality, and needs, and you honor that with every act of care.

Our animals thrive because of all of you. You’ve created a place where rescue becomes recovery, where fear transforms into trust, and where every animal knows they are valued and safe. The residents are lucky to have such incredible advocates.

Celebrating Buttercup’s Rescue Day - 6 Years and Counting!
Six years ago today, Buttercup found her forever home at Barn!
In spring 2019, we received a call about an eight-year-old cow whose owner had recently lost her husband and could no longer safely care for her. Buttercup had become fearful and aggressive, making feeding and care nearly impossible. Rather than send her to slaughter, this woman contacted us.
When Buttercup arrived, our team set up a quiet, private pen where she could decompress. Staff worked patiently to gain her trust, discovering her weakness for corn on the cob along the way.
The magic happened when she was finally ready for the main pasture. The moment Buttercup stepped into that field, she transformed completely - bounding joyfully through the grass to meet her new cow friends, spending hours frolicking like she’d never experienced such freedom.
Today, while still cautious with people, Buttercup has come so far in learning to trust again. Her journey from fear to freedom continues to inspire us every day, and we can’t wait for many more years together!
Your sponsorship will help provide daily care, regular medical checkups, and cover any unexpected emergency care. Please sponsor Buttercup to provide the care she deserves!

Happy Rescue Day to Thor & Liz! 6 years down, so many more to come!

Their Rescue Story: Two Barn Sanctuary friends brought Liz and Thor, to us in June of 2019. The couple had been approached by a lady in a parking lot who asked them to take over their care. The ducklings were unable to walk due to what seemed to be leg deformities.

We immediately took them to our avian vet, Dr. Susan Orosz, PHD, DVM. She examined them both, and found the reason for their leg issues was likely due to being kept in a small box for their first few weeks of life, unable to learn to walk or swim. Their legs simply didn’t know what to do. Dr. O recommended they undergo physical therapy every day in order to help increase their mobility and gain muscle memory.

Our animal care team made sure every day that Liz and Thor had their legs gently exercised and supervised pool time—with plenty of leafy greens as a reward! As the ducklings became more confident in their swimming abilities, they became more vocal and playful. By late summer, they were splashing their caregivers and nearly flying out of their pool! With the help of water therapy, they have made incredible improvements in their strength and mobility.

Your sponsorship helps provide daily care, regular medical checkups, and cover any unexpected emergency care. Please sponsor Liz or Thor to provide the care they deserve!
