Blue Merle vs Blue Cryptic Merle

• A Blue Merle is where the Merle gene is clearly expressed on the coat, creating visual patches or swirls of diluted black/gray (“blue”) mixed with darker areas. You typically see obvious merling on the body, face, ears, ect.

• A Cryptic Merle is where the dog carries the Merle gene but the Merle pattern is extremely limited or hidden. The dog may look solid blue/black or have only tiny, subtle areas of merling.
