Easter is around the corner- and with this exciting time comes some new considerations to make for our furry friends. With these tips you can make it a safe and “hoppy” holiday! 🐰☀️🐣🥚

1. Avoid the chocolate! Chocolate contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs (and not great for cats, either). Potential dangers include severe drops in blood sugar and organ damage. Keep that candy on a shelf where your pup can’t reach!
2. Keep the grass in the basket! Artificial grasses and basket decorations are equally as fun for us as they are for our pets- all it takes is a second for your furry friend to grab a hold of these and swallow, leading to gastrointestinal blockage, diarrhea, vomiting, or worse.
3. Easter and Spring plants- with the season and holiday come some beautiful plants; but please remember to do your research before purchasing any new plants or flowers if you have friends with paws in the house. Easter lilies, for example, are especially toxic to cats. Even just a few bits of ingested pollen from an Easter lily can cause damage to the kidneys, or even kidney failure. So can you still have plants in the house? Absolutely! Our best advice is to find somewhere out of reach, like a closed off bedroom or a tall shelf, to display your new decorations. It’s a good idea to monitor your plants to ensure they are not shedding any leaves that could make their way into the mouth of a curious pet.

So how do we let our pets in on the fun of the Easter holiday? Heres some ideas to include your friend 🐶🐱

•Learn to make a pet-safe Easter basket by visiting the link:

•Buy or bake Easter themed treats

•Look for Easter themed toys

•Take Easter themed pictures

No matter what you do this Easter, we hope your holiday and your pets are safe, happy, and healthy. As always, please call us at 716-608-6383 with any questions or concerns.

Let’s Talk Prevention! 🪳👀

As weather warms up in the Spring, our furry friends have a greater risk of contracting pests and parasites (although believe it or not, these critters were hanging out outside in the winter too!)

Fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal parasites are a few examples of the icky pests that can hitch a ride on or in our pet companions. That’s why year round prevention is so important! Here are a few examples of the prevention we carry in clinic, what it does, and why we love it:

-Bravecto: chewable tablet for dogs (available in topical for cats) that prevents fleas and ticks. The best part? It’s only given every 3 months!
-Simparica Trio: a chewable tablet for dogs that prevents fleas, ticks, heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms. One of the easiest ways to cover all your bases in one pill! Given once monthly.
-Credelio Quattro: a chewable tablet for dogs that prevents fleas, ticks, heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, AND tapeworms. Clinically proven 6-in-1 protection, given once monthly.

So why is prevention so important? Let’s break it down.

Aside from general itch and discomfort from fleas and ticks, ticks are known to carry many diseases that pose a threat to both dogs and humans. Ticks carrying Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, or Ehrlichia can easily transit this to a dog if bitten. While Lyme disease can be treated in dogs, it is never fully curable. Just like with humans, the severity of the symptoms will depend on the individual. Lyme disease is unlikely to be transmitted by cats- however cats can contract fleas!

Dogs contract heartworm after being bitten by a mosquito carrying the heartworm larvae. The larvae then migrate to the heart of the dog where they continue growing, weakening the dog’s immune system over time. Heartworm in dogs and puppies can be life threatening in some cases.

Prevention is key! Year round prevention is the safest way to ensure our furry friends are protected. Please contact the office at 716-608-6383 for more info or to purchase prevention for your pet. (Please note: in order to purchase heartworm prevention your pet legally needs to have an annual negative heartworm test and have not missed previous doses). Let’s be ready for all that Spring and Summer have to offer us and our fur babies! ☀️

Let’s Talk Toothbrushing!

Did you know 80% of dogs over the age of 3 have some form of dental disease? Cats can suffer too!

Owners can help lower this statistic by starting toothbrushing early- but it’s never too late to start! Using a brush and animal-formulated toothpastes daily, or at minimum a few times weekly, can help remove stubborn plaque and tartar that lead to these painful diseases. There are many options on the market and in our clinic to get you started. Rewarding with praise and treats can help make this a positive experience for your furry friend.
