We've welcomed three new critically endangered pied tamarins into the world! Carly and Daphne both recently had babies, growing our group to 11 individuals. These small primates are at a serious risk of going extinct in a matter of decades, so every newborn is a symbol of hope for the species. ❤
Pied tamarins are only found in the Brazilian city of Manaus and in the surrounding rainforest, and deforestation, habitat fragmentation, collection for the pet trade and other factors have forced them to the brink of extinction. In fact, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species predicts an additional population reduction of 80% within the next two decades.
At Chattanooga Zoo, we have the second-largest group of pied tamarins in the country, and we are one of only six zoos currently housing the species. Our group accounts for about 25% of the U.S. population of pied tamarins. We are honored to play a role in conserving this unique, important species and fighting against extinction.
You can also support our pied tamarins through a unique naming opportunity! Through our Bidders for Critters online auction, you can bid on naming rights for 2-month-old pied tamarin twins! The auction also features exclusive behind-the-scenes animal encounters, one-of-a-kind art and other unique gifts and experiences. All proceeds will help us build a new animal hospital, further enhancing medical care for the pied tamarins and our entire Zoo family!
Bidders for Critters kicks off Monday, April 21! Learn more and sign up here: https://www.charityauctionstoday.com/bid/14177
