Acclimation: The First Step
Acclimating your axolotl to its new environment is crucial for its well-being. This process ensures that your pet adjusts smoothly to the water conditions of its new home.

1. Turn Off the Lights: Dimming the environment or turning off the aquarium lights can help reduce stress in the axolotl during the acclimation process.

2.Float the Bag: Place the bag containing the axolotl in your aquarium, ensuring it floats. To help the bag stay afloat, open it and roll its top towards the outside (For a better visual understanding of the acclimation process, you can watch this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJEVdM5dl80).

3.Introduce Aquarium Water: Every 5 minutes, scoop a small amount of water from the aquarium and add it to the bag. This gradual introduction helps the axolotl adjust to the water chemistry of its new home.

4.Release the Axolotl: After about 45 minutes to an hour, use a net to gently introduce the axolotl to the aquarium. Do not add the water from the bag to the aquarium; dispose of it down the sink.

Foooooddd

Fish will be food not friends.. If you think youll be pairing your axolotl's with your beautiful fish.. you wont.. maybe at first but eventually all fish become food.. Also, wanna avoid aggressive fish because they will mistake the Axo gills and nip causing stress..

Minnow & Goldfish make great snacks.. I buy about 40-60 every two weeks and just put them in the tank.. They don't last too long

Nightcrawlers or red worms are best for adult Axo while frozen blood worms or brine shrimp will be needed until they reach about 6 months old. It is important the worm is not too long due to the Axolotls not having teeth.. So they will slurp the worm hole but if the worm is too big it could potentially ball up and bust the stomach of the axolotl. Cut them into half or even half of half.

Some pet stores do have Axo pellets.. mine are spoiled with being fed by hand nightcrawlers or feeder fish and will not eat the pellets..

Axolotls are blind so they may nip at your hands... it doesn't hurt they do not have teeth.. If you choose to hand feed make sure you wash your hands then make sure the soap is rinsed very well.

Tank Requirements...

20-30 gallon tank then for each additional add 10 gallons. I have 3 in a 50 gallon they seem to do great.

They require cold water.. all the time.. Below 68 is ideal so if your house stays warm youll need to keep unfiltered water in ice trays.

Best bottom for a tank will be nothing.. no sand, no pebbles, nada.. they accidently eat it..

Dark environment with no direct or bright light for the tank.. They are unable to close their eyes due to not having eye lids..

Objects in the tank need to have rounded edges and smooth.. Axolotls are very fast when spooked they will go nuts running into everything in the tank...

All water added no matter the amount needs to be "prime". This is a water conditioner you can buy anywhere..

25%-35% water change weekly

Tank should not have a full to even steady current..

We are super excited you visited! You must be researching your new pet or thinking of getting one! I am happy to answer any questions. My knowledge is simply from trial and error and by no means do we claim to be experts. We invite Axo lovers to blog about what worked for them and what didn't. I am the owner of 3 large adults and unexpected litter of 175 babies.... We will be using this site to post the babies as they grow to an adoptable size. I do not plan on having more babies but from what I gather its pretty impossible to "not" have babies. We will offer a coupon discount if you send us a picture of your set up. We are willing to offer bulk if you are able to show proof you have the capacity.. Post any questions to our wall and we will happily answer those in hopes of not only providing information some wont think of but to also having to answer the same question! I hope to bring awareness and education to these guys! They are well worth it!
